Did you know a group of Spotted Hyena is called a clan? These inquisitive carnivores live in large groups made up of up to 90-120 individuals and are often made up of smaller family groups or sub-clans. Just like the hyena, we are also a big clan at Zoos SA, with many different teams and individuals all working together to connect people with nature and save species from extinction. Thanks to pawsome partners like Teamgage, we aim to create a positive and productive workplace for both our staff and the animals that call our sites home. 📷 Adrian Mann #partnership

How do you help a Chimpanzee with a fractured ankle? The answer is a surgery surprisingly similar to operating on a human, with the help of a leading South Australian orthopaedic surgeon! When our dedicated keepers noticed Sandali wasn't his usual self, they leapt into action. With an initial examination revealing no clear external causes, a CT scan quickly revealed the problem under the skin – a fractured ankle. A big team came together to provide specialist care, including Monarto Safari Park's experienced Chimpanzee keepers and expert veterinarians, as well as The Austin Vet Specialists and Dr Bhavin Javad, an orthopaedic surgeon who operates on humans. It's thanks to this collaborative effort that we were able to offer Sandali a level of care on par to what a human patient would receive. 👏 The complex surgery ran for five hours and saw the team securely fix Sandali's fracture with special screws. Two weeks on, Sandali is now back on his feet, exploring the habitat with the rest of the Chimpanzee troop at Monarto Safari Park! The habitat offers plenty of enriching experiences, including mulch to forage for tasty snacks through, thanks to our friends Peats Soil & Garden Supplies. This World Giraffe Day we want to shine a light on these gentle giants and their plight in the wild. Sadly, there are approximately 117,000 giraffe left in the wild and are listed as vulnerable to extinction by the IUCN Red List . With threats of hunting and trapping, civil unrest, and habitat loss, their population numbers are slowly decreasing. Zoos SA’s work in protecting giraffe extends to wild habitats by partnering with the GIRAFFE CONSERVATION FOUNDATION who are fighting to save the species throughout Africa. Zoos SA’s support has helped purchase GPS satellite-tracking units that provide a better understanding of wild giraffes’ movements and habitat use to inform effective conservation and planning. Zoos SA is on a mission to save this incredible species and is proud to facilitate the most successful giraffe breeding program in Australasia at Monarto Safari Park – 58 giraffe have been bred at the park! #WorldGiraffeDay
