This World Giraffe Day we want to shine a light on these gentle giants and their plight in the wild. Sadly, there are approximately 117,000 giraffe left in the wild and are listed as vulnerable to extinction by the IUCN Red List . With threats of hunting and trapping, civil unrest, and habitat loss, their population numbers are slowly decreasing. Zoos SA’s work in protecting giraffe extends to wild habitats by partnering with the GIRAFFE CONSERVATION FOUNDATION who are fighting to save the species throughout Africa. Zoos SA’s support has helped purchase GPS satellite-tracking units that provide a better understanding of wild giraffes’ movements and habitat use to inform effective conservation and planning. Zoos SA is on a mission to save this incredible species and is proud to facilitate the most successful giraffe breeding program in Australasia at Monarto Safari Park – 58 giraffe have been bred at the park! #WorldGiraffeDay

Just one year ago, we rescued 2,000 southern white rhino from a failed captive breeding operation, who were at risk of being poached or sold off as part of a liquidation process. We did this with one clear goal: to rewild each and every one to well-protected areas across Africa. These 2,000 rhino represent around 13% of the world’s remaining population. Their return to the wild is one of the surest ways to help save the species, while also allowing them to realise their full conservation value. Each rhino we send home is a step forward for conservation in Africa. Moving 2,000 rhinos is the largest, multinational wildlife translocation in history. While we have successfully moved 160 rhino this year to two locations within South Africa, we need to move 300 a year for the next 10 years. Today on World Rhino Day, we’ve launched a way for you to be part of this journey and help send a rhino home. By doing so, you’re not just helping these rhino return to the wild, you’re contributing to the future of conservation, the preservation of a species, and the lasting health of our planet. The lion, also known as the "king of the jungle," is a majestic and iconic animal that plays a vital role in many ecosystems. Lion (panthera leo) poaching is a significant threat to lion populations, driven by various factors such as human-wildlife conflict, trophy hunting, traditional medicine, bushmeat trade, and poisoning. The consequences of lion poaching are severe, including: 🐾Population decline: Poaching leads to a decline in lion populations, threatening their survival. 🐾Disruption of ecosystems: Lions play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of their ecosystems, and their loss can have cascading effects on the environment. 🐾Loss of genetic diversity: Poaching reduces genetic diversity within lion populations, making them more vulnerable to disease and environmental changes. 🐾Supports illegal wildlife trade: Lion poaching perpetuates the illegal wildlife trade, fueling corruption and organised crime. Conservation efforts, including education, habitat protection, and anti-poaching initiatives, are essential to protect lions and combat poaching. Additionally, addressing human-wildlife conflict and promoting coexistence with lions is crucial to ensuring the long-term survival of these majestic animals. #bigfive #lion #poaching #wildlife #proudforester #Day17ofconsistencywithtechsisi.

There’s been a recent seizure in Thailand of lemurs and tortoises endemic to Madagascar: 🐾 16 ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta), endangered on the IUCN Red List 🐾 32 common brown lemurs (Eulemur fulvus), vulnerable 🐾 357 radiated tortoises (Astrochelys radiata), critically endangered 🐾 877 spider tortoises (Pyxis arachnoides), critically endangered The seizure of so many critically endangered animals has alarmed experts, who say this underscores the global reach of wildlife trafficking networks using Thailand as a transshipment hub for illegally sourced wild animals and plants. The authorities were acting on intelligence from an international investigation operating in the country to clamp down on cross-border organized wildlife crime. Madagascar authorities have so far arrested 18 people in connection with the seizure. Ernest Lainkana Zafivanona, director-general of Madagascar’s customs authority, said the international incident highlights the vulnerability of Madagascar’s vast coastline and protected areas to unscrupulous trade, particularly along the remote southern coast that skirts the critically endangered tortoise species’ natural range. “There are still gaps in coastal surveillance. Improvements are necessary in the control system of our 5,000 kilometers [3,000 miles] of coastline,” he said. 🌍🐾 On this #WorldAnimalDay, let’s spotlight the incredible yet threatened species of the Central Annamites! This unique region is home to many remarkable endemic wildlife species, from the elusive saola to the colorful red-shanked douc, that are under tremendous hunting pressures due to snaring driven by the illegal wildlife trade. Snares impact more than 700 mammal species in the region, and Cambodia, Laos and Viet Nam are at the epicenter of a regional snaring crisis. Millions of snares are active at any given moment in the protected areas of these three countries. A multifaceted approach is needed to effectively reduce snaring and protect Southeast Asia’s wildlife, including enhancing capacity of local and national authorities to enforce laws, engaging with communities in conservation and providing sustainable livelihood options that don’t involve hunting, and monitoring and research to assess the extent and effects of snaring on wildlife. Join us in raising awareness and advocating for stronger protections to ensure their survival. #ProtectWildlife Read more about the unique species in the Annamites: https://lnkd.in/gEpR5MP7

Thrilled to announce that our latest research has just been published, revealing the hidden dangers of illegal sport hunting in Brazil’s rich ecosystems. By analysing social media data, we uncovered alarming patterns of illegal hunting across the country. Over a two-year period, we documented 2,046 posts revealing the hunting of 4,658 animals, including 157 native species, 19 of which are threatened with extinction. The Atlantic Forest and Caatinga biomes showed severe wildlife depletion, with a troubling shift from large mammals and reptiles to smaller birds. Our findings highlight the urgent need for enhanced surveillance and the development of well-managed, sustainable sport hunting programs to protect Brazil's biodiversity. These efforts are crucial not only for conservation but also for empowering local communities to manage and oversee designated hunting areas. #Research #Conservation #WildlifeProtection #IllegalHunting #Biodiversity #Brazil #SustainableHunting https://lnkd.in/e2aA48zT

This is not only problematic for the fish as a most threatened species, but also food security, and the risk of civil unrest and conflicts erupting/worsening over maritime boundaries and foreign fishing vessels. Very important article.
"Fish: The world’s most threatened listed species are fish. Of the migratory species that the convention lists as needing some level of protection, 97% are under threat of extinction. Over-exploitation from hunting and fishing stands out as the most significant threat to migratory species globally. The report spotlights fishing bycatch as a huge problem."

📢 Promising Trends in Romanian Youth's Knowledge and Acceptance of Hunting 🇪🇺 🇷🇴 A recent survey by the General Association of Hunters and Anglers from Romania (AGVPS) reveals that Romanian youth (18-24) are at the forefront of hunting knowledge and acceptance in Europe: 🔹 Broad Acceptance: 77% support legal and regulated hunting, highlighting a proactive stance towards conservation. 🔹 Superior Knowledge: 18% are familiar with hunting laws and practices, surpassing the European average. General acceptance of hunting in Romania is strong, with 75% of respondents agreeing or neutral that hunting is acceptable if conducted legally and ethically. Tristan B. Breijer FRGS, FACE Policy Advisor, who has been leading the social acceptance project, remarked, "This is a great sign for the acceptance of hunting in Europe. Reaching the youth is key to ensuring the future of sustainable wildlife management." Romania's effective wildlife management, especially concerning its large brown bear population, depends on evidence-based strategies and the positive engagement of its youth. FACE advocates leveraging this trend for enhanced conservation efforts across Europe.
