  • It was a while ago that we visited the USA to learn about cervical cancer and the impact it's having on American women. It's estimated that approximately 4000 women die each year from the disease in the United States. And although it's preventable through HPV vaccination, screening & treatment, NBC News reported recently that rates of cervical cancer is on the rise with research suggesting that some women are not doing enough to catch the disease earlier. But to catch cervical cancer early, you need to know about cervical screening- what it is and where to get one. To do that you need access to health services and you need to be able to get follow up treatment if it's needed. For many women this is not simple or easy to do. We think the emphasis should be on public health education and helping women to access services so they can be detected early. Are you due for a cervical screening? If you answered yes, or if you answered that you're not sure, book in with your health care provider as soon as you can. #takecareofeachother #cervicalscreening #cervicalcancer #cervicalcancerelimination

  • We've been attending sessions of #ConqueringSkinCancer this week. And from the questions being asked during Q&As and in the foyer before and after, there still seems to be confusion about whether it's safe to tan. Some people do think it's healthy. And lets face it, there are folks basking in the sun everywhere you go, so presumably they think a tan is ok. So we thought we'd share what the experts have told us, over and over, and over again. Check out our reel 'There's no such thing as a healthy tan'. In this reel you'll hear from Prof Georgina Long AO the Co-Medical Director of Melanoma Institute Australia, Prof Victoria Mar the Director of the Victorian Melanoma Service at The Alfred, Dr Philip Tong Fellow of the Australasian College of Dermatologists, Adjunct Associate Professor Craig Sinclair, Prof David Whiteman is a medical epidemiologist with a special interest in the causes, control and prevention of cancer. Could you get a more credible line up of experts to share this message! If you think you look better with a tan, perhaps think about the harm you could be causing your skin and try an alternative like a spray tan... But we think you look good in your natural skin tone. Because once you know what a tan really means, it's harder to think that a suntan looks good. What do you think about tanning? Tell us in the comments. @Mike Hill @MoonshineAgency @sue collins

    CEO at Cancer Council Victoria

We’ve come so far since the bronzed skin days of the 1980s. Even though it’s one of our most preventable cancers, more than 15,600 Australians are diagnosed with skin cancer each year so it is vital that we highlight the dangers of UV exposure and the steps we can take to protect ourselves and others. Tonight, Cancer Council Victoria hosted a special screening of Conquering Skin Cancer—a must-see documentary now playing in cinemas across Australia. This powerful film shares the moving stories of skin cancer survivors and features insights from world-renowned experts who are leading the charge in prevention and treatment. More than just a documentary, Conquering Skin Cancer is a call to action— and we all have a role to play in creating a safer future. We left the screening inspired, informed, and motivated to take meaningful steps toward raising awareness and supporting innovative solutions. Let’s keep the conversation going, spread the knowledge, and work toward a world where preventable skin cancers are a thing of the past. With Craig Sinclair - Head of Prevention and Emma Glassenbury - Head of SunSmart. #SkinCancerAwareness #Prevention #UVProtection #SocialImpact #ConqueringSkinCancer

  • 2 out of 3 Australians will develop a skin cancer in their lifetime- but this is not set in stone. And in fact, we have made extraordinary strides in cancer research and treatment over the past decade. Diagnoses that used to be a death sentence are now able to be managed as a chronic illness. Radiation treatment and invasive surgeries are becoming less necessary depending on when the cancer is detected. The experts are optimistic, and the evidence speaks for itself. We can do it. Together, we're striving to conquer skin cancer. From the feature film “Conquering Skin Cancer”, in cinemas now. 💛 Book your tickets now- you might save a life this summer!
