Three days left until applications close at 5pm (AEST) on Thursday 31 October 2024. Applications are invited for a PhD candidate to join a five-year, $NZ9.5 million research programme (2024-2028) funded by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) Endeavour Fund (New Zealand). ‘He karapitpitnga mariko – Immersive regenerative tourism experiences in Aotearoa’ is an interdisciplinary project that turns challenges into opportunities, researching and enabling new forms of physical (in-person) and virtual visitor experiences. Our research programme explores opportunities to create immersive and interactive tourism experiences using techniques from virtual and augmented realities. The tourism technologies that we are developing will allow tourists to experience remote tourist attractions by ‘virtually being there’, or by augmenting visitor experiences when physically present. The successful applicant will join the research team as a PhD candidate at Griffith University (Australia) under the principal supervision of Professor James Higham (Griffith University, Australia). Co-supervision will include a colleague at the University of Otago (New Zealand). The primary focus of this supervised PhD will be to explore the impacts of AR/VR technologies on tourist experiences in Aotearoa New Zealand across different phases and in relation to different aspects of the visitor experience. The research will address distinct aspects of both actual (in person) and virtual (remote) visitor experiences in relation to specific target outcomes. This PhD project will involve visits to New Zealand to work with members of the research team, undertake data collection and engage with end users of the research. Enquiries can be directed to James Higham at j.higham@griffith.edu.au or james.higham@otago.ac.nz Further information on this scholarship and application details are available here: https://lnkd.in/gP_3GPjk Further information about this research programme is available here: https://lnkd.in/gTUtnjmG #griffith #griffithuniversity #gift #griffithinstitutefortourism #griffithbiz #griffithths #griffithtourism

Professor Suresh Mahalingam’s research team at Griffith University Institute for Biomedicine and Glycomics and Griffith Health has played a pivotal role in uncovering viral mechanisms and translating these discoveries into therapies and vaccines. Using advanced molecular techniques like codon deoptimisation and infectious reverse genetics, the team have successfully created vaccines that are progressing through pre-clinical and clinical trials for the Chikungunya, Zika, and SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) viruses. NHMRC, in partnership with the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care Medical Research Future Fund and the United Kingdom’s NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research), are launching a grant opportunity to fund platform trials to improve the lives of people with serious health conditions. This international collaboration will harness Australia and the UK’s shared strengths, ideas, expertise and infrastructure, to address areas of unmet health and care needs. NHMRC CEO, Professor Steve Wesselingh said that international collaborations such as this joint call allow us to explore untapped global talent. “It is exciting to think that the outcomes of these platform trials, where multiple treatments are evaluated simultaneously, could help combat many areas of health and medical research where there is an unmet clinical need” said Professor Wesselingh. Thanks to the leadership team from ETHERIDGE SHIRE COUNCIL who paid us a visit while they were in Brisbane. The team at Griffith Institute for Tourism has done a great job over many years of supporting the ambitions of this Council to create a brighter future for its community through tourism and sustainability initiatives. Brent D. Moyle and Anna Kralj represented GIFT at our breakfast this morning while we were fortunate to have Mayor Barry Hughes, outgoing CEO Ken Timms PSM and incoming CEO Mark Watt for a discussion about what we have achieved together and what the future may bring. This is a terrific example of research and teaching expertise being used to have real impact in regional Queensland. Caitlin Byrne Martin Berka Sarah Gardiner Bronwyn Harch (FTSE, FQA)
