🚨 Caribbean education is facing a significant crisis, no more evident than in the disappointing results in the 2024 CXC examinations. 😔 During his keynote address Reimagining the Future (Again): Radical Shifts Needed for Caribbean Education Transformation, on the final day of the recent Regional Symposium and Policy Dialogue on Transforming Education in the Cayman Islands, Director General of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), Dr Didacus Jules, noted that education transformation must be approached as a connected, system-wide priority. Dr Jules outlined 8 key failures that have contributed to the slow progress of change in the regional education system: 🔑 Colonial legacies 👩🏫 Lack of technology integration 🚀 Poor policy development 📚 Outdated curricula 📊 Resources constraints 🌱 Persistent inequality 🧠 Social challenges 📈 Limited access to higher education ✨ “Driving it all must be a compelling vision and purpose... the why of education,” said Dr Jules. 🌎This week, Serena Rossignoli, Acting Head of the Caribbean Development Bank 's (CDB) Office of Independent Evaluation, and Thania de la Garza, CDB Evaluation Specialist, represented CDB at the UNDP National Evaluation Capacities Conference in Beijing, China. Serena participated in a panel discussion, sharing insights on "Navigating Contextual and Cultural Diversity: Tailoring Evaluation Systems to National and Regional Realities." Thania moderated the session, which explored key challenges and best practices for strengthening national M&E systems in the Caribbean. 🚨Key lessons learned include the importance of tailoring M&E models to the Caribbean's unique context, involving civil society to drive transparency, and focusing on resilience to address vulnerabilities posed by natural disasters. The discussion highlighted the need for a systemic, long-term approach, alongside technical assistance and regional cooperation, to build sustainable and effective monitoring and evaluation systems. CDB remains committed to supporting Caribbean nations in addressing these challenges and fostering data-driven decision-making for resilient development. 📷In our photos: 🔷Thania (far left) and Serena (second left) during their panel discussion. 🔷Serena (second right) and Thania (far left) are joined by fellow evaluation professionals Camille Spencer (far right) and Lisa Goonai, both from Trinidad and Tobago who also in attendance at the Conference.

Our #Caribbean story of resilience building continues 20 years after Hurricane Ivan. The region's small island developing states remain exposed to increasingly volatile climatic events. Acting President Isaac Solomon participated in a commemorative event in #Grenada recently led by CCRIF SPC (formerly the Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility) and, and affirmed that CDB continues to work with partners including governments, civil society and private sector to build a stronger and more resilient region. Our comprehensive approach to addressing climate resilience and disaster risk management aims to: ▶️enhance capacity in vulnerable sectors, ▶️increase partnerships to mobilise concessional resources and expertise, and ▶️develop and promote relevant tools. Through strategic collaboration, continue to enhance climate change awareness, improve access to reliable data, engage mutli-sector stakeholders in meaningful discussions, in efforts to support #SIDS in building resilience and adapting to climate change challenges.
