Climate change remains one of the largest threats to biodiversity, human security and the global economy. As temperatures rise and the intensity and frequency of adverse weather increases, the need for us to build greater climate resilience is more critical than ever. In 2022, The Bridgetown Initiative was born out  of a high-level retreat held in Bridgetown, Barbados. Here, the need to reform the international financial architecture (IFA) to mobilise more robust financing and resources to combat the impacts of climate change was recognized as more urgent than ever, especially for small island developing states who are disproportionately impacted by climate change. Aligning with the culmination of both the 79th UN General Assembly (UNGA) and Climate Week 2024 this week, the Bridgetown Initiative 3.0 was launched by the Honourable Miss Mia Amor Mottley, Prime Minister of Barbados. In order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) , especially Goal 13: Climate Action by 2030, Her Excellency, Mia Amor Mottley, Prime Minister of Barbados recognizes in the Bridgetown Initiative 3.0 (2024) that: “We are living in the season of superlatives on a scorched Earth. To have any chance of reversing this trajectory, we must build a more responsive, fairer and more inclusive global financial system to fight inequalities, finance the climate transition, and accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals”. The Bridgetown Initiative 3.0 has three main goals:  1) changing the rules of the game, 2) shock-proofing vulnerable economies and 3) augmenting resources, and provides a detailed roadmap for how to best achieve this, in order to ensure that the fight to address the climate crisis is more inclusive of all voices, that it effectively mitigates the risks against vulnerable economies and also better augments the financing and resources needed to secure our climate resilience. The Bridgetown Initiative 3.0 (2024) reminds us all that ‘we can and must do better’. Let’s continue our work in Barbados and beyond to raise awareness, engage in activism to create social change and secure more robust financing to address the climate crisis. Climate Week NYC 2024 continues to be filled with timely insights and calls to action, for the  collective safeguarding of our planet’s climate, both now and in the future. Today at the Global Citizen NOW (Global Citizen): Health and Climate Financing Sessions event, The Honourable Mia Amor Mottley, S.C., M.P., Prime Minister of Barbados (Mia Amor Mottley) in her Keynote Remarks spoke about the importance of bridging the gaps in how we work towards climate resilience, highlighting three goals under the Bridgetown Initiative 3.0: 1. Changing the rules of the game- to better buffer the impacts of climate change, every voice must be heard and small island states need a seat at the table 2. Shock-proofing vulnerable economies- to ensure the economies of small island states can still recover from the risks and impacts of the climate crisis. 3. Augmenting Resources- to increase financing and augment resources by engaging our communities, raising awareness and inspiring activism to build global climate resilience. Barbados' Prime Minister, the Honourable Mia Amor Mottley, SC, MP, delivers the country statement during the Plenary session of the Summit of the Future at the United Nations General Assembly Hall (September 22, 2024).

The GYBN Caribbean Chapter is pleased to welcome young Caribbean nationals (aged 18 - 35) to apply to be a youth representative at both the Caribbean Regional Preparatory Workshop in Miami, from September 11 - 13, 2024, and COP16 in Cali, Colombia, from October 21 - November 1, 2024.   The Caribbean Regional Preparatory Meeting in Miami will be hosted by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat, in partnership with the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) and the Caribbean Biodiversity Fund (CBF), and will help set the region's agenda for COP16 and concurrent meetings of the Parties to the Cartagena and Nagoya Protocols.

Meet Mckenzee! She is one of the brilliant students studying with us at Walkers Reserve as part of the University of Oregon’s Global Education Oregon (GEO) study abroad programme. Primatology was the first module of study for the students this year. Take a look at Mckenzee detailing her experience for us. The Barbados Green Monkey has inhabited the island since the early 1600s. It has no natural predator and because of this, it has amassed a large population. The first module of the University of Oregon’s Global Education Oregon (GEO) study abroad programme focuses on primatology. Green Monkeys were introduced to Barbados in the early 1600s from West Africa during the slave trade, where they were initially given as gifts and pets before being released into the wild. Their population has since grown substantially, posing significant challenges for local farmers due to crop damage and loss. Through field visits to local farms, students learned firsthand about the issues farmers encounter and the protective measures they utilise to reduce crop loss by monkeys. Mahmood Patel, owner of Coco Hill Forest, shared invaluable insights.
