The previous Awami League government used the Digital Security Act 2018 to harass many, with one person even dying in custody. Although the Act was repealed in 2023 after massive protests, it was replaced by the Cyber Security Act 2023, which essentially mirrors the DSA. After a student-led uprising in July-August, the Hasina government fell, and the Yunus government sat on the chair, promising to uphold human rights in Bangladesh. However, their actions regarding the CSA don't align with that promise. While citizens call for repealing the Cyber Security Act, government officials continue to issue statements on amending the act. Police recently arrested two police members advocating for reforms, under this oppressive law. It suggests the current government is also misusing the Act against the dissent. We demand the immediate repeal of the Cyber Security Act 2023 and call on the government to cease enforcing this law until it is abolished. #AbolishCSA

On July 15, at 1 am, mobile internet services were halted at Dhaka University during the student anti-discrimination movement in Bangladesh. Later that day, at noon, the students were attacked by government-backed groups, resulting in at least 100 injuries. During this period, the attackers searched the mobile phones of various individuals on the street, targeting anything supporting the movement. We urge all human rights groups worldwide to stand in solidarity with this cause and closely monitor the anti-human rights activities occurring in Dhaka.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us at the Tech Tales Youth: Dhaka Screening yesterday! Special gratitude to renowned filmmaker and producer Arifur Rahman and EngageMedia's Communications and Outreach Coordinator Rezwan for their valuable time and insights. While the event mainly focused on film screenings, their speeches shed light on the power of cinema to drive for a better world with better justice and rights. Activate Rights is deeply appreciative of all participants. We're firm believers that only through collective action we can protect our rights in the digital realm. Solidarity!

In Bangladesh, where fundamental human rights remain elusive for diverse communities, the concept of internet freedom can appear as an unreachable ideal.
