🇪🇺 How can the EU harness the full potential of agroforestry? AGROMIX has set out 5 core policy pathways in its white paper "Transforming European Food Systems with Agroforestry." These policies can help the EU lead the way towards a sustainable, resilient, and equitable food system that meets the needs of present and future generations. To maximise agroforestry uptake, the EU should: 1. Formalise a consistent classification and criteria system for agroforestry across Europe. 2. Embed transformative agroforestry within a radically reformed CAP. 3. Ensure robust, long-term financial rewards for agroforestry implementation. 4. Firmly embed tree products and services from agroforestry systems in numerous value chains. 5. Make farmers, landowners and relevant decision-makers familiar with transformative agroforestry practices. 🌳 🐑 🌾 🦉 The full white paper is available for download in the Policy Corner of the AGROMIX website: https://lnkd.in/d-p6zTd2 🔄 Coventry University Estonian University of Life Sciences Wageningen University & Research Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna Università di Pisa Agroecology Europe Association Universidad de Extremadura Cranfield University ILVO (Instituut voor Landbouw, Visserij- en Voedingsonderzoek) Agroscope Tenuta di Paganico Soc. Call for Contributions: Health and Agroecology For the second issue of Rooted Magazine, planned for March 2025, you are invited to contribute grounded stories and reflections on the connections between #health and #agroecology. This issue will explore how the state of human and planetary health forces us to rethink #foodsystems. What role can agroecology play? Especially looking for lessons and insights from real experiences. Send in summaries of 250-500 words of testimonies/stories or opinions/perspectives by Wednesday 20 November 2024! https://lnkd.in/eDe_gQmx

Plukboerderij GRONDIG participated in the AGROMIX project: Transforming European Food Systems with Agroforestry. The project addresses the apparent lack of mixed farming and agroforestry policies by reviewing current agricultural policies, identifying areas for improvement and by proposing new policy design and implementation options. For more info see agromixproject.eu. Thank you Vincent Dauby, Bert Reubens and Paola Migliorini for your kind support and trust to let me speak on the AGROMIX Summit in Brussels. A special thanks to Vincent for guiding me in writing the foreword for the AGROMIX White Paper. It was a great honour to represent all my colleagues, farmers, who opt for mixed farming and agroforestry. . A big thanks to my beloved colleagues Benny, Koen and Basil for allowing me to take up precious time away from our farm. . And last but not least, thank you my friends Svetlana - Verbinder - Stepanova, Filip - Bruggenbouwer - Plompen from Impact Speakers and mentor Joris Walraet for helping me overcome my fear of speaking in front of a group. . “Agriculture and our farming practices must radically transform if we are to change our current course toward climate change, biodiversity loss and growing inequality. Agroforestry can transform landscapes and the food system. The backing of European policy makers to support this urgent transformation is indispensable.” Boerin Elise Agroecology Europe Association CIFOR-ICRAF Instituut voor Landbouw, Visserij- en Voedingsonderzoek (ILVO) #sustainableagriculture #mixedfarming #agroecology #agroforestry

Food vendors in the informal sector are key players in our food system, providing meals and essential nutrition to the majority of Kenyans. Yet, they often face limited access to resources that could enhance their livelihoods, improve working conditions, and strengthen food safety practices. Empowering these vendors with skills in areas like food safety, financial literacy, and customer service is vital. By investing in their growth, we’re not only supporting their businesses but also building more resilient, inclusive, and healthier food systems across Kenya. Let’s promote the role of informal food vendors as a critical part of our economy and communities! #FoodJustice #SupportLocalVendors #ResilientFoodSystems #Agroecology Agroecology Fund Agroecology Coalition Agroecology Europe Association Centre for Agroecology, Water & Resilience Centre for Agroecology, Water & Resilience Biovision Foundation Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT

#LargeFarms transition to Agroecology needs an Agenda. The article reviewed here argues that the alarming trend of expanding large-scale farms worldwide highlights the urgent need for a transition to Agroecology. 🔔 Large-scale agriculture is currently responsible for 70% of global deforestation, most of the agriculture-related greenhouse gas emissions, extensive water use, and habitat destruction, which leads to significant biodiversity loss. Agroecology practices, however, are currently being adopted mainly by small, family-run farms. Large-scale farms continue to rely on conventional agricultural practices for several reasons, including limited access to suitable knowledge, management techniques, and technologies tailored to large field sizes, mechanized operations, and a few commercial and value chain barriers. Additionally, these farms are highly dependent on external input technologies. 🌐 There are also Regional differences: agriculture in the Global North (Europe and North America) is heavily subsidized, while it is heavily taxed in the Global South – these are affecting the approaches farmers take in each region. To encourage a shift to #agroecology in large-scale farming, any strategy must prioritize securing income and profitability from the beginning of the transition. 🍎 #Agroecological practices can thrive when the transition accounts for social and economic costs and externalities beyond mere productivity. Moreover, co-benefits can be expected from greater biodiversity and ecosystem services. However, the article points out that under Europe’s current policy, regulatory, and market conditions, there is little incentive for such a transition. A forward-looking agenda that emphasizes more than productivity is needed to enable a shift toward agroecological farming, with the support of #young farmers and technology. "Agroforestry production systems are an agro-ecological approach having a wide array of social, economic and environmental benefits." Well, that's clear. Now, let's move things forward and support a transformative change out there in the fields. Need some suggestions? I strongly recommend you to have a look at the AGROMIX white paper on "Transforming European Food Systems with Agroforestry", launched today at the Coventry University Hub in Brussels. It was a great opportunity to connect the EU level work with the efforts we're doing at regional, Flemish level. We literally exchanged handbooks, roadmaps and white papers! Join Shima Sajadi and Jeroen Groot from Wageningen University & Research on 31 October at our webinar on identifying areas in Europe where Dynamic Agreoecological Systems (DynAEs) could work well. They will discuss the hot- and cold-spots for scaling out DynAEs across Europe: 🌍 Recommendation domains and how similar farming methods could succeed by looking at the biophysical environment and the socio-economic characteristics of different areas. 👩🌾 Finding hotspots (suitable areas) and cold spots (less or unsuitable areas) on the map. 🦋 Matching these characteristics with the features of DynAEs, while considering that adjustments may be needed for specific types of farms due to the diversity in farming practices.
