Today, our President Jan Plagge and Director Eduardo Cuoco had the opportunity to meet with Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Christophe Hansen. Among the key topics discussed were the recognition of organic farmers for their crucial role in making European agriculture more sustainable across social, economic, and ecological dimensions. 🌱 We emphasised the need to translate this recognition into concrete actions, including simplifying bureaucracy for organic operators within the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and secondary legislation of the European Organic Regulation. The meeting also highlighted the importance of further investments in digitalisation to ease administrative burdens for organic farmers. We are pleased to see that organic farming remains high on the Commissioner's political agenda as a flagship initiative for the future of agriculture. 🌱 A GMO-free future for EU agriculture: A call for action 🌱 Organic youth organisations are calling on EU leaders to ensure that agriculture remains GMO-free. In a powerful resolution, these youth groups stress that a GMO-free future is crucial to achieving the EU Commission's vision for the future of agriculture. The growing threat of new GMOs (so-called New Genomic Techniques - NGTs) presents a challenge to this vision, and youth organisations are urging that these technologies not be deregulated. The resolution highlights the importance of preserving agroecological systems that prioritise biodiversity, sustainability, and food security. The youth of Europe recognise that maintaining a GMO-free approach is essential not only for the environment but also for protecting public health and ensuring long-term food sovereignty. Europe’s future agricultural policies must continue to support organic farming systems and guarantee that new technologies do not undermine their fundamental values. Today we are celebrating the International School Meals Day, a day dedicated to raise awareness on the importance of healthy, sustainable, organic meals in schools 🏫 🥗 I am glad to have participated to organise this event by IFOAM Organics Europe ICLEI Europe and the Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament in the European Parliament of Strasbourg for this occasion! Special thanks to our host Dario Nardella for such a successful event! The European organic movement firmly believes that sustainable public procurement is a great way institutions can advance their sustainability and promote the development of environmentally friendly and sustainable agriculture and food practices, while providing tasty healthy meals to children in the EU 🍎 And we are not the only ones believing this!
