📸 Workshop "Climate litigation in Belgium and beyond" We experienced very exciting discussions on Wednesday, 11 September, during the Workshop "Climate litigation in Belgium and beyond", attended by the best experts in the field in Belgium. 🗨️ Presentations and discussions provided very valuable insights into this constantly evolving subject. The discussions notably focused on the diversity of climate cases and the legal basis on which they rely, the use of science in the courts, the link with human rights, the separation of powers, and the influence of climate litigation beyond the courtrooms. A short summary of the workshop, and the presentations, will be made available soon on www.climatecentre.be Thanks to all speakers and participants for making this event a success! 🙌

We experienced the warmest summer ever recorded worldwide and in Europe, with temperatures on average 0.69 degrees higher than in the 1991-2020 period. 🌎🌡️ Climate change causes more extreme weather events: where the South and East of Europe had to deal with intense heat and forest fires, we in the North mainly had to deal with heavy rainfall. Achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions is crucial to mitigate climate risks 🌍 🔍 Recent research, with Belgian scientist Joeri Rogelj, shows that current emissions could temporarily exceed 1.5°C warming. Permanent exceedance significantly increases the likelihood of climate impacts. Strict emissions reductions in this decade are crucial for planetary stability. Full paper via: https://lnkd.in/ee84Dh9F 💬 Valérie Trouet comments during an interview with De Morgen: "We need to take action now to limit further warming. If we exceed 1.5 degrees of warming, we better keep the overshoot as low and short as possible." Read more about what she has to say via (Dutch): https://lnkd.in/ez_uGahP
