The BDIA acknowledges the concerns raised in the recent press release by Elia and Fluvius regarding the increasing pressure on the electricity grid in Flanders. At the same time, we want to emphasize that the debate on grid capacity must be conducted more broadly, recognizing the crucial role of digital infrastructure in Belgian society and the economy. Data centers are not just energy consumers—they are the foundation of digitalization, and thus of innovation, economic growth, and sustainability across various sectors. From smart mobility to circular industry and AI: none of these applications can exist without a reliable digital backbone. The sector is highly aware of its responsibility and is already making efforts to contribute to solutions actively. Data centers build their own infrastructure, deploy battery systems and alternative energy sources, and develop initiatives around heat recovery. These efforts demonstrate that the sector does not want to be part of the problem but is actively working toward the solution. “We need to stop viewing digital infrastructure merely as an energy consumer. It is a fundamental building block of our economic and sustainable future. The sector is taking responsibility, investing, and thinking in terms of solutions. What we need now is policy space and collaboration.” - Carole Santens Therefore, the BDIA calls on all stakeholders to accelerate efforts towards a future-oriented grid policy that accommodates the digital transition. Only through cooperation and a well-coordinated approach can we prevent Belgium from falling behind in an era that is more dependent than ever on high-performance digital infrastructure.
