This year marks the start of an interesting European collaborative project developing a system of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions monitoring from space. SCARBOn’s mission is to design the most efficient formation of satellites for accurate monitoring of CO2 and CH4 emissions. Our teams are deploying an advanced, compact ground-based spectrometer for the validation of the data. All details on https://lnkd.in/g8qk4_gZ

BIRA-IASB has been researching space and the composition of the atmosphere for decades; since the 1960s with rocket 🚀 and balloon experiments, later using satellites. 🛰 This way, the institute studied the Earth and its gravitational field and made important contributions to space geodesy 🌍. BIRA-IASB also dedicated itself to the study of atmospheric phenomena, which allowed our knowledge of the stratosphere and ozone to expand. Balloons, satellites, ground stations, the space station and its Columbus laboratory are invaluable tools in this ongoing exploration. And the adventure does not end there, as BIRA-IASB continues to push the boundaries of scientific knowledge to unravel the mysteries of space and our atmosphere. #BIRA_IASB60years #spacehistory

Did you know that Dirk Frimout, Belgium's first astronaut, began his career at the Royal Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy? From his early days as head of our Instrumentation Department to his historic 🚀 mission in 1992, Dirk has inspired generations. And he has paved the way for other Belgians, such as Frank De Winne and soon Raphaël Liégeois ... #BIRA_IASB60years ▪ https://lnkd.in/d4B9hERa ▪ https://lnkd.in/dsyHzykQ

HIGH ALTITUDE RESEARCH STATION JUNGFRAUJOCH: Monitoring the Earth's atmosphere and documenting Climate Change. For the next four nights, I will be staying at the High Altitude Research Station Jungfraujoch, more specifically at the Sphinx Observatory. The Sphinx Observatory in Switzerland is a high altitude research station and astronomical observatory located at 3.571 m (11,716 ft) above mean sea level. It is one of the highest observatories in the world and the highest on the European continent. Food must be brought up. Hardly anyone sleeps well the first night because of the lower oxygen levels, resulting in frequent awakenings. The reason I am here, actually for the second time already, is that Jungfraujoch is crucial for understanding the Earth's atmosphere and climate change. In the coming days, some measuring instruments will be replaced by newer and more precise ones. This is a moment in the history of long-term observations to capture photographically. I am also very happy that Belgians have been involved from the very first observations in 1950. As Jungfraujoch is far above most sources of air pollution, the High Altitude Research Station is particularly suitable for measuring the composition of the atmosphere. Of particular interest is the concentration of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2). The University of Liège specializes in working with high-resolution infrared spectrometers since 1950. As a result the chemical composition of the Earth’s atmosphere can be derived because the various gases present in the path of the sunlight absorb selectively the light while it travels through the atmosphere. This yields information about the composition of the atmosphere above the Jungfraujoch. Among other things, scientists can track the development of more than 20 atmospheric gases connected with ozone depletion or the greenhouse effect. The weather station is permanently manned. Radiation is being measured. It is the driving force in energy exchanges between the atmosphere, the oceans and the ground: the most direct effect of global warming is expected to be an increase of infrared radiation emitted from the atmosphere to the ground. The radiation level at Jungfraujoch is extreme, which makes these measurements very interesting. Because it’s in the clouds from time to time, the Jungfraujoch is also an ideal place to investigate the interaction between aerosols and clouds. Radioactivity and cosmic rays are also being monitored. The coming days I am creating photo documentation for the scientists and for people around the world so they know what is happening here and how important this scientific work is to understanding our changing climate, space and our planet. Special thanks to SOFAM for their financial contribution to realise this project. #jungfraujoch #sphinxobservatory Royal Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy University of Liège Embassy of Belgium in Bern BELSPO Emmanuel Mahieu F.R.S. - FNRS
