Marine Strategy for a sustainable and resilient North Sea Researchers have thoroughly assessed the health of the Belgian North Sea in the context of the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive. ❓ How is our marine biodiversity doing? What are the trends in pollution and disturbance? Are fish populations sustainably managed? What is the impact of increasing human activities at sea? And how does climate change affect the marine ecosystem? All relevant aspects are discussed. In addition, attention is paid to measures to counteract unfavourable developments. Some key messages from the assessment: 🐬🪽 Porpoises, seabirds and some fish species remain vulnerable to human disturbance and climate change, while habitat loss and nutrient pollution put ecosystems under pressure. 🧪🛳️ Although some pollutants are decreasing, others remain a risk to the marine environment. In addition, busy shipping increases the risk of pollution through accidents and discharges. 🌡️⛈️ Rising seawater temperatures and acidification threaten marine ecosystems and species, while more extreme weather events and sea level rise make coastal areas more vulnerable. 🚯📣 Plastic pollution remains a persistent problem, and increasing noise pollution from shipping and industry poses a threat to marine mammals. 🚤🐟 Overfishing remains a challenge, while the rapid growth of offshore wind energy offers opportunities, but also has ecological impacts that must be monitored closely. Onze onderzoekers zullen de hond nu bestuderen. 🐕 Des archéologues ont découvert à Velzeke, près de Zottegem, entre autres, un chien romain bien conservé. Support for the Black-legged Kittiwake in the Belgian North Sea 🐧Will an endangered seabird soon colonize the waters off the Belgian coast? 🇧🇪 🦅 How? As part of the NID4BirdLIFE project, we will create breeding ledges on the Princess Elisabeth Island to replicate the natural layout of cliffs. 🐣 These will provide nesting opportunities for the Black-legged Kittiwake population which could lead to a vital boost for this vulnerable species in the North Sea region. 📈 It is estimated that up to 1,000 breeding pairs of these birds will be nested on the island by 2030. 🤝 Together with our partners in this project, INBO (Research Institute for Nature and Forest - Instituut voor Natuur- en Bosonderzoek) , Renewables Grid Initiative and Elia , we will keep you informed of the progress of the project! ➡ More info: https://lnkd.in/eR6aub7p 📷 Institute of Natural Sciences / K. DOLPHIN DOES NOT SURVIVE VISIT TO THE SCHELDT ⚰️ A dead dolphin was found along the Scheldt in Burcht on 7 March. Not an everyday find! 🩺 Investigation showed that it was a young female with a length of 166 cm and an estimated weight of 70 to 80 kg. Because the carcass was at the very least ‘no longer fresh’, no cause of death could be determined. 🐬 Even more impressive was that on 31 January 2025, a live dolphin was actually filmed in Hamme. It was very likely the same animal that was now known to be a Common Dolphin. (Video in the comments.) 🌊 The Common Dolphin is not adapted to life in rivers, but prefers the open sea and generally stays far away from coasts. 📍 In the past ten years, only a few sightings of live Common Dolphins have been known for our country, with a handful of others whose identity could not be determined with certainty.
