Compensation, contribution, procurement... oh my! Currently, the leading use of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) is in the voluntary carbon markets as a means of compensating for emissions. 𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐨 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐥. So we spent some time reviewing them all and came up with this overview👇 What CDR is used for (left) is grouped by how it is achieved (right). The relative widths are based on estimates of how much CDR could be deliverable by that use case from now until 2050. For a more thorough examination current CDR uses and what policy should be used to increase the market, see our recent publication 👉 https://lnkd.in/gE5MrAuT #carbonremoval #cdr #eupolicy

"The IPCC says we will need to be balancing remaining emissions. And the question is, well, what do we mean?" - Eli Mitchell-Larson In looking at remaining emissions we find that "carbon budgets are depleted, which means that any emissions that are still occurring add to that carbon debt. And if you want to stick to 1.5, these large historic emitters, they're going to need to remove these emissions at some point" - Robert Höglund By dissecting the term "residual emissions," Robert and Eli explore how a reframing of this confusing term points us toward the fact that all excess emissions must be removed, with only some of these emissions considered "CDR-Optimal". Robert and Eli explain it all on the Carbon Curve podcast with Na'im Merchant. You can find the full episode here: https://lnkd.in/eH9wR35Z. Ayo carbon removal (CDR) researchers, funders and policymakers, the database you've always needed is out! 📊 We have centralised and compiled existing resources into a comprehensive and accessible database, and have identified CDR areas that lack sufficient research or are underexplored. With this tool, we aim to help target funding where it is most needed to accelerate CDR research, development and innovation. 🔭 Go ahead and explore! 👉 https://lnkd.in/eqdPi5yA The database centralises information from Frontier’s carbon removal knowledge gaps, RMI’s Applied Innovation Roadmap for CDR, the European Commission’s report on R&I for climate neutrality by 2050 and our own additions based on our expertise, with a particular focus on justice and ethical governance. #CDR #RD #Database

📢 A call for supporting carbon removals in the next EU mandate Carbon Gap is joined by 44 other organisations in writing to Climate Commissioner-designate Wopke Hoekstra ahead of his confirmation hearing in the European Parliament urging him to adopt a set of policies to support a sustainable scale-up of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) in the next EU mandate. Here are our 4 key recommendations: 🎯 Set separate targets for emissions reductions and carbon removals in the revision of the Climate Law 📈 Boost CDR funding to scale up both early- and later-stage technologies 🔎 Provide clarity for buyers of CDR in the Green Claims Directive, strengthening the integrity of climate claims 📋 Create stable demand for carbon removals through a compliance market and long-term policy support Carbon removals are vital for reaching net zero. With the new European Commission being formed, this is a pivotal moment to ensure carbon removals become a pillar in Europe’s fight against climate change. If the EU were to directly purchase carbon removal in order to boost market demand and create a business case, what would it look like? 🌱💸📈 In our newest policy brief, we propose that the EU should procure carbon removal following a 𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐨 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡.🎨 But how to divide limited EU funding? Should it focus solely on cost-efficiency, divide funding equally across methods, or focus on delivered tonnages? What would it look like if only methods under the CRCF were eligible? 👇 Currently, there is 𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡-𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞. The EU therefore needs to include purchasing carbon removal as part of its wider strategy for developing, deploying and scaling-up carbon removal to achieve climate neutrality and net negative emissions thereafter Introducing an 𝐄𝐔 𝐏𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐞 would boost competitiveness and make the EU a more attractive environment for the most promising CDR innovators. ⌚ In simple terms, the EU must act now, but not rush its plan to support carbon dioxide removals (CDR). Associate Policy Director Rodica Avornic closed off our discussions on the State of CDR in the EU this summer, calling for stronger carbon removal policies to complement drastic emissions reduction. After all, 2050 is just around the corner... Missed the event? Here is the full recording. 👉 https://lnkd.in/dTVDuuj6 #CDR #CarbonRemoval #NetZero #StateofCDR

🌳 Forests and wooded land cover about 40% of the EU’s land space, and yet, our current data on EU forests is unreliable and inconsistent. The Forest Monitoring Law (FML) aims at improving the evidence base surrounding European forests, and has relevance to nature-based CDR solutions. Developed in response to the fragmentation and inconsistency in current data on EU forests, the proposal seeks to improve the quality and consistency of forest data. 🌲We tell you what the Forest Monitoring Law could do to fix that in our new Policy Tracker entry: https://lnkd.in/e3reWbN9 #ForestMonitoringLaw #EUForests #CDR

The world must remove 7 to 9 billion tons of CO2 annually by 2050 to reach #NetZero emissions. No matter how generous the pledges, the voluntary carbon market alone will never deliver that. Associate Policy Analyst Thibault Aubert explores how the EU could leverage the potential of a broader range of regulated uses for #CarbonDioxideRemovals to deliver climate benefits 👇
