"The proof is in the pudding" Does this British proverb summarize the state of the carbon removal industry? We believe so. In the latest podcast episode of "What if it works?" by the MIT Energy Initiative, Howard Herzog, Kara Miller, and Robert Stoner discuss important challenges for carbon removal solutions that the industry needs to tackle. The bottom line remains: To mitigate the worst impacts of climate change on communities, ecosystems, and industries, carbon removal solutions must be scaled up drastically next to deep emission reductions. And we're talking about the entire portfolio of carbon removal solutions, from Reforestation to Enhanced Rock Weathering to Direct Air Capture. Especially when it comes to engineered solutions like Direct Air Capture, things always look good on paper, but you only know for sure when you put it to the test in real life. The proof is in the pudding: Until today, Climeworks remains the only company that operates two large-scale Direct Air Capture and Storage facilities, actively removing CO₂ from the atmosphere. Climeworks has been conducting R&D on Direct Air Capture for 15 years. We're rigorously testing our technology—the third Generation already—in our small-, mid-, and large-scale testing facilities, on top of our two operating plants. 200 million data points are collected every day to improve its performance and enhance our field operations. New research from Kearney and We Don't Have Time, surveying more than 500 CFOs across multiple geographies, reveals: 🔹92% of CFOs plan to increase their investments in sustainability, with more than half committing to significant increases. 🔹93% see a clear business case for sustainability investments—a sentiment consistent worldwide. 69 percent even expect a higher ROI from sustainability initiatives compared with conventional investments. 🔹Nearly 2/3 already measure the cost of inaction, recognizing the financial risks of delaying the transition to sustainable practices. This is a clear signal: sustainability is now embedded in financial strategy—not just as a commitment, but as a driver of long-term success. At Climeworks, we see this shift firsthand. Public procurement refers to the process by which government entities purchase goods and services, and it can play a pivotal role in advancing carbon markets. By directly purchasing high-quality carbon removal credits, governments can drive demand for carbon removal solutions and set an example for other market players.     This approach not only supports innovation in carbon removal technologies but also demonstrates governments’ commitment to addressing the effects of climate change on local communities and its financial risks.    Compliance markets set standards and requirements that require companies to retire carbon removal, further ensuring transparency and effectiveness in carbon markets.
