The Circular Cities and Regions Initiative (CCRI) implements the circular economy across Europe's regions and cities
About us
The Circular Cities and Regions Initiative (CCRI) is an initiative of the European Commission, launched by the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation as part of the EU Circular Economy Action Plan 2020. It aims to support Europe’s green transition by boosting circularity at local and regional level. The CCRI contributes to the policy objectives of the EU Green Deal, including the 2050 climate neutrality target, and the EU Bioeconomy Strategy. It is funded by Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe, the EU’s research and innovation framework programmes. Combining knowledge sharing, technical and financial support, the initiative assists stakeholders across Europe’s cities and regions, including regional and local authorities, industry representatives, research and technology organisations and civil society. It provides comprehensive support over the whole life cycle of local and regional circular economy initiatives. Why get involved in the CCRI? Cities, regions and territorial clusters can benefit from: • facilitated knowledge sharing with other front-running cities and regions through various events; • easily actionable guidance for the development and implementation of Circular Economy Action Plans and Circular Systemic Solutions (CSS); • quick access to relevant resources to address knowledge or capacity gaps; • information about upcoming funding opportunities; • facilitated evaluation and monitoring of the implementation process of a CSS through a dedicated self-assessment tool; • greater opportunities for cooperation with and support from partner initiatives and organisations; • increased visibility for commitments and actions. Interested stakeholders who are not participating as Pilots or Fellows may also be able to participate in CCRI events. On 📅9-10 October, we participated at the Smart Cities in Smart Regions 2024 Conference in the Finnish city of Lahti. 🇫🇮 The workshop that we attended was called "Workshop: Päijät-Häme Circular Economy Forerunner". The CCRI delivered a keynote speech, and this CCRI region presented its Green Transition Programme. The new CCRI project, CircSyst, was introduced, with Päijät-Häme involved as a biowaste demonstrator. A CCRI representative moderated one of the breakout sessions, and these were the outcomes: 🔵 There is a need for stronger engagement between cities and other stakeholders (private sectors, academia). 🔵 Financial engineering is vital – partnerships with local banks and European Investment Bank (EIB) are essential. 🔵 Collaboration across circular economy-related initiatives is important. 🔵 National coordination should be improved to reduce inefficiencies. 🔵 Successful inter-regional collaborations, like recent efforts in Finland, set a great example! Have a look at the CCRI calendar to stay in touch with the upcoming events and activities ➡️ https://lnkd.in/e_2Z5pYm #CCRIEurope

Success story: the CCRI city Uppsala has secured funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) to improve its construction marketplace! 👏 The focus of Uppsala’s initiative has been on advancing circularity in the construction value chain by developing a local physical market for secondary construction materials. 🏗️ The city is preparing to expand its solution to include, not just materials from disassembly products, but also demolition waste and other types of secondary materials. ♻️ Other participants will be invited to store materials without any storage fee. Well done, Uppsala!
