We’re excited to announce our collaboration with Circulair Friesland on the Circularity Gap Report (CGR®) Friesland! Friesland is a Dutch province known for its commitment to the circular transition. But how circular is its economy today? For the first time, the CGR Friesland will examine the province’s economy through a circular lens. The partnership was officially announced on March 20 during the Dutch National Conference on the Circular Economy in Friesland’s capital, Leeuwarden, where we also shared preliminary findings from our analysis. Our research highlights positive momentum, driven by strong collaboration between the local government, businesses, and academia, as well as the active participation of local companies. The final results will be unveiled at the World Circular Economy Forum in Brazil on May 15. Stay tuned for more updates on the launch! Photo by Menno de Boer.

During the Dutch Week of the Circular Economy (Week van de Circulaire Economie), let's learn from the Dutch cities' efforts to reduce waste! Despite the Netherlands’ reputation as a leader in circularity, Dutch households generate 524 kilogrammes of waste per person per year, which is more than the European average. In the whole country, that’s more than nine million tonnes of household waste a year! Even with the widespread availability of modern recycling systems in the Netherlands, effectively managing these quantities remains a challenge. To become truly circular, Dutch cities need to address the problem at its core and eliminate waste at the source! But what does a waste-free city look like? What basic facilities and logistics will it need, and where should these be located? Check out the image below for a glimpse of some key elements! And read our report to learn how cities can incentivise waste prevention: https://lnkd.in/efa_vJ_h What is your city doing to reduce waste?

This study provided unique insight into how we can implement circular interventions to bring about the necessary system change. When these interventions are combined, there is the potential to increase the circularity of the Dutch economy from the current 24.5% to as much as 70%! Read the report here: https://lnkd.in/gqTmpWF In addition, in 2022 we provided insight into the current circularity and employment within the Dutch built environment. We provided recommendations to companies, policy makers and unions regarding the circular transition. EU Omnibus Package: what are the implications and next steps for companies? The Simplification Omnibus Package unveiled by the European Commission last week faced criticism for weakening Europe's commitment to sustainability reporting and transparency. However, the package also presents some positive opportunities for companies—if approached strategically. For example, the CSRD reporting timeline extension to 2028 is their chance to go beyond mere compliance. With extra time at hand, companies can develop more ambitious circular economy strategies and embed circularity deeper into their business models. Circle Economy’s consulting team is ready to support companies by: ✅ Developing inspiring strategies, implementation plans and roadmaps; ✅ Buiding the data infrastructure, baselines, KPIs and targets needed for monitoring and reporting; ✅ Providing sector-specific insights and thought leadership. ♻️ Unpacking the newly introduced EU Clean Industrial Deal: what does it mean for circularity in Europe? The Clean Industrial Deal lays the groundwork for upcoming legislation, including the much-anticipated Circular Economy Act, set to take shape in 2026. The good news? Circularity is at the heart of the Deal. The EU aims to leverage circular economy strategies to secure critical raw materials, strengthening both energy independence and economic resilience. The Commission's plan aims to accelerate the shift by: ✅ Aggregating demand for critical raw materials through joint purchasing platforms, helping companies secure the materials they need. ✅ Establishing an EU Critical Raw Materials Centre to centralise procurement and increase supply chain resilience. ✅ Proposing a Circular Economy Act by 2026 to reach 24% circularity by 2030. 🌱 At the core of this strategy is eco-design—ensuring products are made to last, easier to repair, and incorporate recycled content. The Commission will push for new eco-design rules to keep valuable materials in circulation. ♻️ Another game-changer will be high-quality recycling, with measures ranging from prioritising domestic recycling over waste exports to creating market demand for recycled materials. 📱 E-waste is also in the spotlight, with plans to revise rules to recover valuable materials from digital and green tech equipment. 💸 Economic incentives will play a key role, including green VAT on second-hand products, and new public procurement criteria that reward circular business models. 🔗 Finally, the Commission wants to harmonise and expand Extended Producer Responsibility schemes to improve collection rates, digitalise systems, and ensure targets are fit for purpose. Circle Economy is ready to support these efforts by conducting research into the value chains, analysing policies’ implications and engaging relevant stakeholders.
