Damien Foundation has been conducting groundbreaking research on preventive leprosy treatments in Comoros for several years. In cooperation with the Institute of Tropical Medicine Antwerp and the Sasakawa Health Foundation, they organise door-to-door screenings. Health workers visit villages to make residents aware of leprosy, its symptoms, and possible treatment. After a communal info moment, the medical team goes door-to-door to perform skin examinations. If they find that someone has been infected with leprosy, the person is offered to start a 6- to 12-month antibiotic treatment free of costs. Recently, the teams have also started social network analysis. Residents are being interviewed on their movements across the island and social habits. This will provide us precious insights on how leprosy spreads from person to person. The results of the study will help identify people with leprosy and devise preventive strategies. ‘Our goal in Comoros is to diagnose leprosy in time and treat it effectively so that people are not left with permanent disabilities. In parallel met Be-cause health uit Damiaanactie haar bezorgdheid over een eventuele vermindering van het budget voor ontwikkelingssamenwerking. We erkennen dat de Belgische regering prioriteiten moet afwegen in een uitdagende geopolitieke en fiscale omgeving, maar pleiten ervoor de financiële bijdrage aan internationale samenwerking te behouden, en zelfs te verhogen. België heeft een voortrekkersrol op vlak van mondiale gezondheid, met name op het gebied van volksgezondheid en organisatie van gezondheidszorg, ziektebestrijding en tropische geneeskunde. Belgische instellingen, universiteiten, mutualiteiten en organisaties zijn cruciaal voor het bevorderen van initiatieven die ieders gezondheid ten goede komen. Ontwikkelingssamenwerking richt zich op gelijke kansen en rechtvaardige toegang tot gezondheidszorg, voor iedereen ter wereld. La tuberculose et la lèpre sont deux maladies qui touchent généralement les personnes les plus vulnérables – des personnes qui vivent souvent dans la précarité, qui ont un faible niveau d’éducation et qui sont peu familiarisées avec les notions d’hygiène et de santé. Il est ainsi compréhensible qu’elles éprouvent une certaine méfiance envers les médecins qu’elles ne connaissant pas, souvent perçus comme jonglant avec des termes médicaux complexes. We also provide social and economic assistance where necessary, such as food parcels or micro credits. In this way, we prevent them from entering a negative spiral as a result of illness. (NL) Vandaag is Wereldarmoededag. Tuberculose en lepra treffen voornamelijk mensen die in armoede leven. Al onze zorgverlening, diensten en initiatieven zijn gratis voor families getroffen door ziekte. We bieden ook sociaal-economische hulp, zoals voedselpakketten of microkredieten, indien nodig. Zo voorkomen we dat gezinnen in een negatieve spiraal van ziekte en armoede terechtkomen. (FR) Aujourd’hui, c’est la journée mondiale pour l’élimination de la pauvreté. La lèpre et la tuberculose sont des maladies qui affectent principalement les communautés qui vivent dans des conditions d'extrême pauvreté. Certain anti-bacterial drugs are known to have toxic effects on the body and the heart, potentially leading to life-threatening arrhythmia. However, the highest leprosy and tuberculosis burden occurs in settings where electrocardiographic monitoring is challenging, due to lack of materials and scarcity of qualified interpreters. Research has found that using a mobile electrocardiogram is feasible and accurate in low-resource settings. The monitor is portable, wireless, affordable and interprets the heart rate in 30 seconds. If the health professional finds that cardiotoxicity is high, the treatment regimen is modified. An example of how evolving technology is contributing to patient safety. In DR Congo komen verschillende huidziekten voor die vooral de meest kwetsbaren treffen. Bij het controleren op lepra, checken gezondheidswerkers ook op symptomen van buruli-ulcus, een infectieziekte die open zweren en wonden veroorzaakt. Dr. Alberto Roggi en dr.
