On 25 August, the Polish Defence Procurement Agency announced the arrival of a new batch of 12 K9A1 self-propelled howitzers in Poland. These new guns are set to enter regular service with the Polish Land Forces in the coming weeks. This timely delivery indicates that Hanwha Aerospace is fulfilling the contract signed last with the Polish Ministry of Defence in accordance with the schedule outlined in the agreement. In July 2022, Poland signed the first executive contract with Hanwha Aerospace for the delivery of 212 K9A1 guns. The first batch of 24 artillery systems was handed over to Poland in December 2022. In 2023, Hanwha delivered a further 40 K9s to the country. According to the agreement, deliveries are set to be completed by 2026. This deal is valued at USD 2.4 billion. The Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) announced on Tuesday that it would procure Saab JAS 39 Gripen E/F fighter aircrafts to replace the aging F-16 A/B jets in the 102nd Squadron of 1st Wing Division. The move is part of the 19.5-billion-baht project to procure a new fleet of fighter jets to replace the old planes that will be gradually decommissioned between 2028 and 2035 after being used for more than 36 years. In its statement, the RTAF said its ad-hoc committee had spent over 10 months considering suitable aircraft from a list of over 20 models, before shortlisting the F-16 Block 70/72 from the US and the JAS 39 Gripen E/F from Sweden. Hyundai Rotem, a South Korean manufacturer of heavy military vehicles, is progressing with deliveries of K2 Black Panther main battle tanks to Poland. In August, several new tanks arrived in Poland and are set to enter service with the Polish Land Forces soon. With this latest delivery, the number of K2 Black Panther tanks delivered to Poland has reached 51. In 2024 alone, the Polish Armed Forces have taken delivery of 23 new tanks from South Korea. According to the contract schedule, an additional 33 tanks are slated for delivery to Poland. In August 2022, the Polish defence procurement agency signed a contract with Hyundai Rotem for a total of 180 K2 tanks, valued at USD 3.4 billion. The Polish Ministry of National Defence decided to purchase these tanks to fill the capability gap left after donating a significant number of Soviet-era T-72 tanks to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Swedish defence company Saab has delivered a new batch of Bolide Mk2 missiles for the RBS 70 air defence system to Lithuania. While the Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence has not disclosed the exact number of missiles received, the value of the shipment has been reported at EUR 11 million. This marks the second delivery of Bolide Mk2 missiles to Lithuania. Earlier this year, in May, Defence Industry Europe reported the receipt of the first batch. The deliveries are part of a broader contract signed in October 2022 between the Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence and Saab, valued at EUR 45 million. The contract includes the provision of an unspecified number of RBS 70 air defence systems equipped with Bolide Mk2 missiles. The Bolide Mk2 missile is designed to enhance interception capabilities, allowing it to engage aerial targets at altitudes of up to 4 km and distances of up to 7 km. This missile system is also in use by several other NATO allies, contributing to a shared defensive posture within the alliance. The Norwegian government announced it was allowing the ammunition manufacturer Nammo AS to transfer the technology Kyiv needs to make its own critically needed artillery ammunition. The Norwegian government reported through its official website on Friday that it was “paving the way for the transfer of Norwegian defence technologies to Ukraine,” by licensing the Nordic Ammunition Company (Nammo) to set up a 155mm artillery ammunition production facility in Ukraine. Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said: “Our government has taken several steps to increase the production of artillery ammunition in Norway. At the same time, we recognize the importance of strengthening the capacity of Ukrainians to produce modern ammunition in Ukraine.” The Nammo CEO Morten Brandtzaeg said the company was proud to be able to share its technology and expertise to support Ukraine in its defence struggle. He added that the government supports the collaboration, and has decided to contribute funds from the Nansen program so that Nammo can transfer technology and expertise to its Ukrainian partner. Rheinmetall, Germany’s largest defence contractor, has reported a significant increase in revenue for the first half of 2024, marking a 33% rise to approximately EUR 3.8 billion. This growth is part of the company’s broader ambition to become one of the world’s leading firms in the defence sector by the end of this decade. In an interview with Handelsblatt, CEO Armin Papperger outlined Rheinmetall’s strategic vision, stating that the company aims to achieve an annual turnover of EUR 40 billion by 2030. Papperger highlighted that crossing the EUR 10 billion revenue threshold this year would represent a 40% year-on-year increase, positioning the company well on its path to achieving its long-term goals. U.S. Air Force Reserve RQ-4 Global Hawk unmanned aircraft has commenced its first-ever deployment to the United Kingdom, arriving at RAF Fairford on 22 August. The deployment, announced by U.S. Air Forces in Europe (USAFE), is of an undisclosed duration and marks a strategic step in the practice of the Agile Combat Employment (ACE) model. The Northrop Grumman RQ-4 Global Hawk, an intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) drone, will conduct operations in international and Allied airspace, adhering to international norms and standards. The deployment underscores USAFE’s ongoing efforts to diversify operating locations and strengthen integration with NATO allies. This mission comes as part of broader initiatives to enhance the survivability of assets by dispersing them across alternate airfields, in line with ACE principles. While details on how ACE will be practised during this deployment remain sparse, the operation represents a significant shift in the way the U.S. Air Force positions its ISR capabilities. On August 23, VOP Nováky officially opened a new filling line for large-calibre ammunition. The ceremony was attended by the Slovak Minister of Defence, Robert Kaliňák, and Michal Strnad, owner of the Czechoslovak Group, which operates VOP Nováky through its subsidiary, MSM GROUP. The new facility, featuring a state-of-the-art automatic feeding system known as a “screw machine,” will initially be used to fill 122 mm and 120 mm ammunition for tanks and mortars. This development significantly enhances the filling capabilities of VOP Nováky, a key player in the European ammunition industry. Since leasing the facility from the Slovak Ministry of Defence in 2013, the Czechoslovak Group has invested EUR 15 million into VOP Nováky, including the installation of advanced robotic production lines and a physico-chemical laboratory. CEO Zuzana Helbichová noted that the latest investment further solidifies the company’s standing as a strategic manufacturer within the European Union and NATO. Saab has received an order from the United States Air Force for Carl-Gustaf M4 systems. The order value is USD 7.8 million with deliveries taking place during 2026. Saab’s Carl-Gustaf system (designated MAAWS in the U.S.) has a long and proven record with the U.S. military. Denmark has finalised an agreement with BAE Systems Hägglunds AB to purchase 115 CV90 combat vehicles, in a deal valued at DKK 9.975 billion (EUR 1.35 billion). The acquisition was confirmed through the European Union’s official procurement portal, TED. According to information released on TED, the Danish combat vehicles will be of the CV9035 Mk IIIC model, the same version recently ordered by Sweden to replace vehicles donated to Ukraine. Denmark first ordered CV90 combat vehicles in 2005 and has since deployed them in Afghanistan. In March, BAE Systems signed a 15-year framework agreement with the @Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organization (Forsvarsministeriets Materiel- og Indkøbsstyrelse), worth approximately USD 400 million, for the repair and maintenance of Denmark’s CV90 fleet.
