The Czech Ministry of Defence has released detailed information on the participation of domestic industry in the CV90 infantry fighting vehicle programme, underscoring its commitment to national defence self-sufficiency. The Ministry’s agreement with Sweden mandates at least 40% Czech industry participation, though Swedish manufacturer BAE Systems Hägglunds AB anticipates surpassing this requirement, significantly expanding the involvement of Czech firms. The Ministry outlined that five core Czech suppliers — VOP CZ, s.p., EXCALIBUR ARMY spol. s r.o., VR Group, a.s., Ray Service, a.s., and Meopta s.r.o. — will play leading roles, from producing vital vehicle components to integrating advanced communications and tactical systems. Beyond these main contributors, additional Czech companies, such as Pramacom-HT and OPTOKON, will supply specialised technology like communications systems and electronic warfare solutions. This extensive domestic involvement is seen as a critical step towards ensuring the availability of support and maintenance within Czech borders, particularly in times of crisis. Croatia has announced plans to strengthen its military capability by purchasing Leopard 2A8 tanks from Germany. This acquisition follows an agreement between Croatian Defence Minister Ivan Anušić and German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius, aiming to enhance the Croatian Armed Forces' capacity and bolster Croatia’s strategic partnership with Germany. As part of the agreement, Croatia will deliver 30 M-84 tanks and 30 M-80 infantry fighting vehicles from its stock to Ukraine, along with spare parts and ammunition. Germany will compensate Croatia for these contributions, reducing the cost of the Leopard tanks in return, making this exchange advantageous for all parties involved, including Ukraine. The decision to procure up to 50 Leopard 2A8 tanks is a significant step in Croatia’s ongoing military modernisation efforts. Minister Anušić emphasised that this initiative complements other recent defence projects, such as the acquisition of HIMARS rocket systems and drones, underscoring Croatia’s commitment to reaching a defence spending target of 2% of GDP before the initially projected 2027 deadline. Lithuanian drone manufacturer RSI Europe has delivered the first batch of FPV drones, named Shpak, to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The drones were supplied under a procurement conducted by Lithuania's Defence Resource Agency in August. The Shpak is a 10-inch FPV quadcopter unmanned aerial vehicle (drone). It is designed to destroy targets by attaching explosives to them. The drone can lift up to 5 kg and has an impact initiation system that is controlled via remote control. These features make Shpak a very versatile platform for selecting explosives and targets. In addition, the Shpak has advanced radio frequency hopping technology, which enables it to defeat the enemy’s radio-electronic warfare assets. The whole system consists not only of the drones, but also of a ground control station and an antenna that allows drone operators to operate from safe positions over long distances. These FPV drones are likely to make a significant impact in the defence of Ukraine. Yuriy Butusov, a Ukrainian defence expert who spoke at the Defending Baltics conference in Vilnius on 8-9 October, repeatedly emphasized that drones are the main weapon currently used to destroy Russian forces. He shared impressive statistics showing how one Ukrainian drone unit has already destroyed over 15,000 aggressor targets since the beginning of the war. FPV drones are one of the main tools for such units. The Ministry of National Defence - Romania has confirmed the arrival of three additional Lockheed Martin F-16AM/BM Fighting Falcon aircraft at the 71st Air Base "General Emanoil Ionescu" in Câmpia Turzii. This fourth batch, part of Romania’s acquisition from Norway, brings the total to twelve F-16s delivered, enabling a gradual re-equipment of the 48th Fighter Squadron. This delivery is part of a EUR 388 million contract, signed in November 2022, for 32 F-16AM/BM Fighting Falcons formerly operated by Norway. These aircraft, initially phased out by the Royal Norwegian Air Force, will serve to replace Romania’s MiG-21 LanceR fleet, allowing Romania to form two new squadrons of Western multirole combat aircraft. The F-16 fleet in Romania now totals 29 aircraft, and additional pilot training is supported through Romania’s participation in the European F-16 Training Centre (EFTC) at the 86th Air Base in Fetești. This centre, with aircraft provided by the Netherlands, offers critical training for Romanian pilots as they transition to these advanced systems. On October 17, in Riga, Latvia, the European Defence Fund project 5G COMPAD (5G Communications for Peacekeeping and Defence) held its first global demonstration, showcasing various 5G network deployment scenarios at sea, in the air, and on land. The demonstration was organized by 5G COMPAD consortium member LMT Innovations and took place at the military base "Daugavgrīva." During the demonstration, several innovative 5G network deployment options were presented. These included potential network coverage simulations, 5G drone tests, satellite communication integration, and other 5G applications on ships at sea. The 5G COMPAD demonstration in Latvia’s 5G testing environment allowed for the evaluation of 5G performance under various conditions and the exploration of new potential use cases. Within the 5G COMPAD project, world-leading partners from the telecom and the European defence industries join forces to enable recurrent integration of 5G and beyond into multi-dimensional robust defence communication systems to sustain effective and efficient information superiority for European armed forces.
