ecoBirdy X Dojo: Design of a Kids’ Izakaya - Part 2 Founders of ecoBirdy Joris Vanbriel & Vanessa Yuan: “We applied the design elements from traditional Japanese aesthetics to a child-friendly dining area. It provides a welcoming, culturally enriched environment where both children and parents can delight in a fully immersive dining experience, with a designated space for each.” ecoBirdy shaped the children's area taking inspiration from Japanese Washitsu rooms. These rooms are traditionally floored with tatami mats, and divided by sliding doors. Washitsu are typically used to host guests seated on the floor for tea ceremonies, flower arranging and art performances. At the kids’ izakaya, youngsters are invited to choose a low seat on the tatami mat made of recycled mattresses, or to have a bar experience seated on the iconic Charlie Chair. On the tatami mat, children instantly feel relaxed and at ease from the moment they take off their shoes, as in any Japanese private space and tatami room. A cosy ambiance is set by the custom wooden U-shaped table, often found in bar-style izakayas to create a sociable, intimate mood for friends and peers to meet. The soft glow from the paper light shade complements the space. Positioned at the centre of the wall, an art piece made of recycled Belgian linen absorbs noise, adding a thoughtful touch, hand-crafted by Vanessa. ecoBirdy X Dojo: Design of a Kids’ Izakaya - Part 1 ecoBirdy is honoured to develop Belgium's first spatial concept for a children's dining area featuring Japanese cuisine, at Dojo Izakaya in Antwerp, run by Dojo, a hidden gem known for its pure flavours, exceptional quality and mysterious underground atmosphere. This feeling is now extended to the separate kids’ izakaya designed by ecoBirdy, where young guests can enjoy an early dinner experience tailored to their size. While top restaurant Dojo is maintaining its exclusive, futuristic atmosphere, Dojo Izakaya establishes a new concept to welcome families with young children. The entrepreneur Dennis Ekisola believes it's important for children to experience a restaurant environment from a young age in a way that accommodates their needs. The kids’ menu is stylishly presented on ecoBirdy’s Mabo Plate, with Chef Gianluca Potami (who also works at the two-Michelin-star restaurant, Hertog Jan) ensuring every bite is delightful. The kids’ menu is created with consideration for a child’s preferences and health, providing a unique, educational experience of dining culture, featuring locally sourced ingredients with a Japanese twist. https://lnkd.in/ey8QTVJ2 #spatialdesign #izakaya #kidsrestaurant #kidsinterior #japanesedining #sustainableinterior #antwerp #charliechair #luisatable #maboplate #ecoBirdy

Design Thinking Practising Design Thinking has been recognized as an important skill in the rapidly changing world of today. Stanford University Institute of Design / d.school founded by designer and entrepreneur David Kelley, defined a framework of the process to foster a design thinking mindset among children, which resonates with the ecoBirdy’s case study in different stages: 1. Empathize: Empathy is the foundation of human-centred design 2. Define: Turning findings into needs and insights 3. Ideate: Generate radical design alternatives and explore wide solutions 4. Prototype: Getting ideas out of the head and into the world 5. Test: Gathering feedback and refining solutions https://lnkd.in/euix-GQa

News from Earth: Newly Identified Tipping Point for Ice Sheets Could Mean Greater Sea Level Rise A small increase in the temperature of intruding water could lead to a very big increase in ice loss, scientists point out in The Guardian. Sea ice melting and glacier loss are the main reasons for sea level rise. Moreover, these phenomena are interconnected, as ices around the planet disappear, ocean levels increase. #sealevelrise #climatecrisis #cutfossilfuels https://lnkd.in/eAAjyyqv
