🚗 Petrol, hybrid or electric? The latest sales figures from the European automobile industry keep telling the same story 📊 The latest figures on European new-car sales once again confirm the continued importance of renewable ethanol, the most effective way to reduce emissions from the hybrid and petrol cars that EU motorists prefer. ⛽ ⚡ Hybrid vehicles are now the number-one category of new-car sales, according to European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA), representing 35.2% of new car sales so far in 2025 and “remaining the preferred choice among EU consumers”. Petrol and hybrid cars together make up more than 71% of new cars. These vehicles will be on the roads for a long time, and the most immediate and cost-effective way to reduce their greenhouse-gas emissions is with renewable ethanol. The need for a more flexible and pragmatic EU approach to de-fossilising road transport has never been clearer. Even beyond 2035, renewable fuels such as ethanol have an important role to play. ePURE is the voice of the European ethanol industry
About us
Established in 2010, the European renewable ethanol association (ePURE) represents the interests of European renewable ethanol producers by promoting the beneficial uses of ethanol in Europe. Based in Brussels, ePURE represents 39 member companies, with 43 production plants in 16 EU member states, accounting for about 85% of the installed renewable ethanol capacity in Europe. Our mission is to promote the use of renewable ethanol in Europe by contributing in a constructive and pro-active manner to the development and implementation of EU policies and legislation that benefits both our industry and society. We pursue this by providing expert advice and input to the EU Institutions, Member State Governments, Brussels-based stakeholders and wider society. Ethanol is an important link in the chain for the transition to a European bioeconomy whereby resources are processed and used more efficiently. Using biomass as a sustainable renewable resource is key to replacing carbon fossil sources in the manufacture of chemicals, materials and fuels. 🔄 Circularity is at the heart of Europe’s agenda — and ethanol #biorefineries are already delivering. 📢 This year, the EU is stepping up its commitment to #circularity, encouraging industries to maximise resources and minimise waste. By generating valuable by-products and energy, the EU #ethanol biorefineries are closing loops and creating economic opportunity. 🚗💨 And they’re off! The Tour d’Europe has officially hit the road, proving that #renewable fuels aren’t just a concept: they’re already a reality! From Madrid to Brussels (and everywhere in between), cars and trucks powered by renewable fuels will crisscross Europe, showing just how accessible and impactful these fuels are in reducing CO2 emissions. With stops in over 20 countries, this journey is all about engaging with citizens, policymakers, and businesses on how we can decarbonise road #transport today. Why does this matter? Because the race to #climate neutrality by 2050 won’t be won by one technology alone. Renewable fuels work with existing vehicles and infrastructure, making them a practical solution that’s already cutting emissions. And to prove it? Every vehicle in the Tour is equipped with a digital fuel twin - tracking and verifying the #CO2 savings in real-time. As Liana Gouta, FuelsEurope Director General, puts it: "The Tour d’Europe is a great opportunity to demonstrate that renewable fuels are already a reality for consumers across #Europe, having both fuel suppliers and OEMs engaged in this initiative carries a positive message towards the recognition of these fuels on the European political scene." 🌍⛽ Follow the journey at www.tourdeurope.eu Let’s drive change together! And they're off! The #TourdEurope is under way and ePURE is proud to be a part of it this initiative to put renewable fuels back on the EU transport roadmap Cars and trucks bearing a distinctive "Tour d’Europe" logo have begun a three-month road trip across several countries to demonstrate the decarbonisation potential provided by renewable fuels, to raise awareness about their accessibility and ease of use in Europe, and to underline their significant role in reaching the EU's objective of climate neutrality by 2050. The Tour d’Europe, spanning from North to South and West to East, will show citizens and policymakers across the EU that renewable fuels are a flexible, technology-open approach to road transport decarbonisation alongside other technologies that can decarbonize road transport, such as electrification and hydrogen. As an existing solution available for existing vehicles, renewable fuels are already delivering measurable greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction results. “ePURE is part of the Tour d’Europe road trip because we want to demonstrate the potential of renewable ethanol to help drive EU transport decarbonisation," said ePURE Director General David Carpintero. "Europeans clearly want the flexibility to choose hybrid and petrol cars – as EU automobile sales figures confirm every month – and the best way to reduce GHG emissions from these vehicles is with renewable ethanol-based fuels. Keep an eye out for E85- and renewable-gasoline-powered cars along the whole tour.” The first official Tour d'Europe event was held today in Madrid, where ePURE President Antonio Vallespir de Gregorio spoke about the contribution that renewable #ethanol is already making to decarbonising transport. ⌚ This #EarthHour, let’s rethink CO2. Tomorrow, at 8:30 PM local time, around 190 countries will turn off their lights, drawing attention to climate issues like our carbon footprint. But what if CO2 could be a resource, not from fossil fuels, but from nature itself? By capturing and storing #BiogenicCO2 — which is naturally released by plants and decomposed agricultural residues — EU ethanol #biorefineries not only reduce our reliance on fossil fuels but also contribute to a strong European bioeconomy. 🥤 From the refreshing fizz in your drinks to its role in green hydrogen and greenhouse applications, biogenic CO2 is a key ingredient in countless everyday products. #ePURE #Decarbonisation #FoodFeedFuel4Europe
