🌍In 1972, the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment marked a pivotal moment, recognizing the crucial link between development and the environment. This led to the establishment of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). A decade later, the Brundtland Commission, led by former Norwegian Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland, produced the seminal report - Our Common Future (1987). This report not only popularized the term “sustainable development” but also emphasized equity and the reconciliation of environmental, economic, and developmental goals. Fast forward to today, the UNEP continues this legacy with the latest Global Plastic Treaty. This treaty aims to address legally binding measures to reduce plastic pollution, from production to disposal, highlighting the importance of global cooperation and promoting a sustainable environment. It is crucial for all stakeholders to engage and work together towards achieving a sustainable future with a science-based approach. The transition may be challenging, but the commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development remains as important as ever.
