Earlier this week, our Policy Officer for Sustainability and Resource Efficiency, Domenico Perone, attended the Affordable Housing Conference where Irene Tinagli, Chair of the newly established HOUS Committee, and #DanJørgensen, Commissioner for Energy and Housing led the discussion on one of Europe’s most pressing issues... 💬 The key messages? 📈 Housing affordability is at a breaking point – rising costs are deepening inequality, limiting economic mobility, and placing a heavy burden on households. ⚡ Energy poverty is a growing crisis – 47 million Europeans couldn’t afford to heat their homes in 2023. More energy-efficient housing is a must, not a luxury! 🏗️ We need smarter solutions – simplified permitting processes, better funding models, and leveraging AI and digitalization to speed up construction 🏡 Social & affordable housing must be a priority – Calls for 30% social housing in every EU municipality, stronger rent stabilization, and a more inclusive approach to housing investments 🌍 Sustainability matters – Housing must integrate climate adaptation measures to be both affordable and resilient 💡The path forward is clear: we need bold decisions, collaboration, and action! The manifesto addresses critical challenges that will shape the future of our industry and society: 🏗 Sustainability and net-zero – Decarbonizing buildings, boosting energy efficiency, and tackling emissions (buildings account for 40% of the EU’s energy consumption!) ♻️ Circularity – Reducing construction waste (which makes up 25-30% of the EU’s total!), promoting recycling, and strengthening material reuse. 🚀 Digitalization and innovation – Driving smarter, more efficient construction through cutting-edge technologies 👷 Skills and quality jobs – Tackling labor shortages and investing in the workforce to build a stronger, more attractive sector 💡 Competitiveness and affordability – Simplifying regulations and making sustainable construction more cost-effective to address Europe’s housing crisis With 10% of the EU’s GDP and 25 million jobs depending on construction, the time for action is now! “Insulation is the foundation of a climate-neutral future. Without it, buildings remain inefficient, energy costs rise, and even the best renewables underperform.” – Andreas Huther, PU Europe President, Managing Director of puren gmbh and board member of IVPU Verband. 💡 According to Andreas, to reach climate neutrality, insulation must be the first step in any renovation strategy. Member States must prioritise insulation in their National Climate & Energy Plans and fully implement the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (#EPBD). 🏡 Andreas also shares an example from the Stadtquartier 2050 project, showing that energy-efficient renovations must begin with insulation.
