✨Let’s keep celebrating the women driving R&D and innovation in our network! Laura Kunga-Jēgere is a senior expert at the Latvian Council of Science and Eureka’s national contact in Latvia. Laura’s career began in plant genetics laboratories, where, as a researcher, she participated in R&D projects. She then decided that innovation could be just as interesting from the other side and went on to become one of the most active and appreciated members of our network! You can always count on Laura to find creative solutions. Perhaps it’s the thriller books she reads that inspire her! #WomenInInnovation

On Tuesday, we had the pleasure of organising the event “Innovative Europe: Innovative SMEs and their crucial role in driving European competitiveness”. This policy conference aimed at showing the impact our European Partnership on Innovative SMEs has made in the European innovation ecosystems, while also sparking debate around some of the most pressing issues of the European innovation area. Our OECD keynote speakers, Sandrine Kergroach, addressed the role of SMEs in driving employment, growth in high-risk R&D sectors and sustainable local circular value chains, while the European Commission’s András G. Inotai reflected on the European innovation ecosystems initiatives and their powerful impact. In our first panel, Barbara Betz, German Aerospace Center (DLR), Jelle Knop, Netherlands Enterprise Agency and Julie Jasmes, SPW Economie Emploi Recherche, explained how the European Partnership on Innovative SMEs is allowing national and regional agencies to support more innovators, meaning international collaboration bears even more fruit. And participating in #Eureka programmes is often a first step to other funding opportunities like the #EICAccelerator. In two fascinating presentations, Eurostars beneficiaries, Jimena Garcia-Romeu, Alcyon Photonics and Denys Plakhotnik, ModuleWorks showed how our programme was fundamental to their companies’ growth in terms of employment, private investment and access to international markets. Our panelists MANUEL IRUN MOLINA, EIT - European Institute of Innovation and Technology, Oscar Fernandez Moyano, CDTI Innovación - Centro para el Desarrollo Tecnológico y la Innovación and Elisabetta Vaudano, Innovative Health Initiative (IHI) reflected on the need for different Partnerships to find common goals and ensure closer cooperation. It is important to keep in mind that all European Partnerships, while focusing on different topics, share the same purpose; they said. Alexandr Hobza, European Commission painted a picture of the European innovation disparity challenge, expressing the importance of not leaving any area of Europe behind. Speakers Laura Kunga-Jēgere, Latvian Council of Science and Milda Kraużlis, EIT Food shared examples of best practices. For our last panel, we discussed FP10 and the future of European R&D innovation mechanisms. Alexander Grablowitz, Partnership Knowledge Hub reiterated that partnerships are a highly effective structure; Hanna Scheck, FFG Austrian Research Promotion Agency expressed a wish that partnerships should be flexible and continuous, and our Director Brit Helle conveyed the hope for a space to still offer SMEs the range of opportunities currently available. We wholeheartedly thank all our speakers for their contribution and for making this event a big success. A huge thank you to the German Permanent Representation to the European Union for having hosted us and for the support in the organisation of this event, and to Sandra Lehneke for her warm welcome speech.
