“Rigid gender roles imposed from early childhood contribute to a culture of dominance and submission, which can escalate into hatred and violence.” – MEP Alessandro Zan Last week our member Fondazione L'Albero della Vita E.T.S. co-organised an event at the European Parliament on tackling #genderstereotypes in education and communication alongside Italia Che Cambia, FpS and Maschile Plurale as part of the #TAGSproject. 📕 At the event, they launched guidelines with concrete tools for educators, media professionals, and policymakers to challenge discriminatory narratives. Speakers, including MEPs Marit Maij, Benedetta Scuderi and ALESSANDRA MORETTI, warned about the growing strength of the anti-rights movement, rising attacks on equality initiatives, the persistent #gendergap in STEM education and the urgent need for gender-sensitive education. This week, Dr. Carine Le Borgne, Eurochild Child Participation Coordinator, is in Spain attending a training workshop focused on "Citizens Assemblies with Children and Youth" organized by Coglobal. This is such a powerful opportunity to share Eurochild’s experiences and insights on meaningful #childparticipation, with a special spotlight on the Eurochild Children’s Council. Today, we are also proud to launch our sub-report on child participation which highlights: 🔸 How children’s voices are integrated into various initiatives at country level; 🔸 The barriers to meaningful participation, especially for marginalized children; 🔸 How child participation is funded across Europe. Last week, Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, President of Eurochild, returned to Brussels to meet with key stakeholders to discuss the state of #childrights across the EU, drawing on insights from Eurochild’s flagship report published at the end of 2024. It was a great honor to represent Eurochild at the Eighth Official Meeting of the Permanent Anti-Racism Civil Society Forum over the past few days. Whether conscious or unconscious, and manifested in both subtle and overt forms, racism perpetuates systemic inequities that disproportionately affect racialised communities, leading to multiple violations of children’s rights. Racial discrimination is further compounded by intersecting factors such as socioeconomic status and access to resources. While there is broad consensus on paper regarding the protection of children’s rights, political will is often lacking when it comes to the most vulnerable children, including racialised children. The plight of migrant children exposes the discriminatory dimensions of Europe’s immigration systems. Significant shortcomings exist in how each EU Member State treats unaccompanied children. Meanwhile, the shrinking civil society space across Europe is particularly affecting those advocating for the rights of the most marginalised, with politicians and media inciting hatred towards the global majority. Civil society organisations working across different fields must collaborate to ensure that no child faces discrimination on any ground. Wrapping up two incredibly productive days of meetings yesterday, focused on driving forward #childrights across Europe and beyond with our President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca. Thank you so much to Commissioner Dubravka Šuica, European Commission, for the important discussion on the challenges faced by children and for her unwavering commitment to advancing the #EUChildGuarantee across the Mediterranean, ensuring that no child is left behind. Thank you, MEP David Casa, for such an interesting discussion of the recent Eurochild Flagship report and the importance of concretely implementing the Child Guarantee in Malta.

Today, Eurochild’s President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca met with Mario Nava, Director-General at DG EMPL and Katarina Ivanković Knežević, Director for Social Rights and Inclusion at DG EMPL of the European Commission, to discuss critical findings and recommendations related to #childrights across Europe. This timely meeting aligns with the launch of Eurochild’s sub-report on the implementation of the #EUChildGuarantee, offering first-hand insights from Eurochild members on its implementation across all EU countries. The sub-report also presents Eurochild’s recommendations to both EU member states and the European Union to ensure effective action is taken to drive positive change for all children. Following last year’s fruitful meeting with Commissioner Glenn Micallef and representatives from European Parliament and European Commission, where we presented our flagship report on #ChildRights, Eurochild President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca was in Brussels today for another productive round of discussions. This time, we met with EEA and Norway Grants and with the Intergroup on Children’s Rights, including MEPs Veronika Cifrová Ostrihoňová, Antonio López-Istúriz White, Caterina Chinnici; as well as MEP Hristo Petrov, and Vice-President Ewa Kopacz.
