🚨 Speaking up for consumer protection in the digital age Yesterday, Els Bruggeman spoke at the Coalition for Trusted Reviews Conference in London. Her insightful talk focused on the current state of consumer protection and the challenges we still face in this rapidly evolving digital ecosystem. While Europe has extensive regulations in place like the DSA and Omnibus Directive , Els highlighted that enforcement is still a major challenge, with issues like fake reviews undermining consumer trust and confidence. She also addressed regulatory loopholes that haven’t caught up with today's realities—think subscription traps, influencer marketing, and addictive designs in gaming. Her key message? There is no one size fit all solution for the complexity we’re facing. We need more collaboration between platforms, marketplaces, authorities, and consumers to ensure fair play in the digital world. We absolutely need to enforce existing rules. But we also need to update them to meet new challenges. 🤝 Together, we can secure a safer digital environment for consumers! 🎮 Keeping Gaming Safe and Fun with Stricter Rules on In-Game Currencies 🎮 The world of gaming has captured millions, but are we all playing on a level field? In-game premium currencies, like Fortnite's V-Bucks or Roblox's Robux, are designed to enhance your experience—but they’re also leaving consumers, especially younger players, vulnerable to overspending and unclear costs. Euroconsumers members in Belgium, Spain, Italy and Portugal have joined 18 other consumer organisations in a complaint coordinated by BEUC - The European Consumer Organisation to EU Authorities about in-game and in-app virtual currencies. Transparency is key: players deserve to know the real cost of digital goods and have stronger consumer protections in place. It’s time for gaming to be as fair as it is fun!
