  • Today, as we celebrate World Food Day 🧺 we're reminded of the critical need to build food systems that are both sustainable and resilient. At EPPA, we are proud to contribute to this mission by promoting responsible policies and innovating paper-based packaging solutions that help tackle global food challenges. Our products extend shelf life and ensure proper portioning, significantly reducing food waste and supporting a greener future. During the FAO's flagship event, we were inspired by thought-provoking messages from global leaders like Qu Dongyu (FAO Director-General), António Guterres (UN Secretary-General), Gerardine Mukeshimana (IFAD vice-president), and many others. The key themes were clear: 🌱 We must produce more with less and promote nutritious food consumption. 🤝 Governments and the private sector must work together, making real investments for lasting change. 💡 Innovative solutions and scalable breakthroughs are needed to achieve long-term resilience. At EPPA, we stand alongside the FAO in their mission to reduce waste, combat hunger, and create a food-secure future for all. #WorldFoodDay #FAO #SustainablePackaging

  • 💡 As POLITICO Europe’s Competitive Europe Week wraps up, we would like to share some food for thought from the remarkable discussions and thought leadership we witnessed. 1️⃣ Cristina Caffarra, Co-founder of the Competition Policy Research Network, highlighted the ongoing challenge of fragmentation and overregulation in Europe. While Europe possesses the skills and capabilities to thrive, the missing ingredients are political will and sustained #investment. 2️⃣ Christian Danielsson, Swedish State Secretary for EU Affairs, urged attendees to critically assess the impact of EU regulations on #competitiveness. He warned to not allow politics to undermine our chances in the digital and green transitions. 3️⃣ John Alistair Clarke, former Director for International Affairs, DG AGRI, elaborated on the “Brussels Effect”: companies and countries often voluntarily align with EU standards because of the Single Market’s gravitational pull. Clarke cautioned that dialogue with third countries is essential to ensure a balanced implementation. 4️⃣ Žaneta Vegnere, Deputy Head of Cabinet for Valdis Dombrovskis, addressed the challenges of Europe’s #EconomicSecurity agenda. She emphasized the need for closer collaboration between the public and private sectors, and among Member States, saying, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” 5️⃣ MEP Miriam Lexmann (EPP, Slovakia), raised concerns about the implementation gap within the EU. While the right decisions are often made, the failure to execute them consistently is undermining competitiveness. She called for a “competitiveness check” on new and existing legislation to ensure it supports businesses rather than burdening them unnecessarily. 6️⃣ Enrico Letta, President of the Jacques Delors Institute, stressed the need to eliminate fragmentation within the EU’s single market. Europe's current ensemble of 27 fiscal systems and corporate laws hampers the potential for growth and competitiveness. According to Letta, “Borders are in our minds, not in reality,” urging policymakers to streamline regulations and create a true single market. 7️⃣ Marc Lemaître, Director-General of DG RTD European Commission, stressed the need for a unified vision that fosters technology development through industry partnerships. The goal: to position Europe as a leader in technological #innovation. 8️⃣ Joan Canton, Head of Unit at DG GROW, emphasized the investment challenge posed by Europe’s twin transition. Europe must demonstrate a compelling business case for investment, while navigating the geopolitical pressures that accompany raw materials and energy sourcing. The key question moving forward is how Europe will seize opportunities for growth while navigating the complex regulatory, political, and economic landscape. One thing is clear: collaboration with the industry, both within the EU and internationally, will be essential to securing Europe’s future in an increasingly competitive world.

  • Yesterday marked the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste. 🌍 Effective #packaging solutions are crucial in tackling this issue by protecting food from damage and spoilage, as well as creating optimal conditions to extend shelf life. 📦 Key figures from Eurostat (2023) show: ➡️ 132 kg of food waste per person in 2022 — 1 kg more than in 2021 ➡️ Total food waste: 59.2 million tonnes (up from 58.4 million tonnes in 2021) ➡️ Top contributors: 🇩🇪 10.7 million tonnes 🇫🇷 9.4 million tonnes 🇮🇹 8.2 million tonnes As representatives of the #PaperPackaging industry, we at EPPA strive to provide #renewable and #recyclable solutions. Paper packaging not only helps prevent food contamination and loss, but also offers practical and safer options for retailers and consumers. ♻️ #ReduceFoodWaste

  • Ahead of the Sustainable Packaging Summit 2024, which will take place in Amsterdam in November, we couldn’t miss the opportunity to take part in the LinkedIn Live Panel hosted by Packaging Europe.   In today’s discussion, our Director General Matti Rantanen was joined by Winfried M., Director of Marketing and Communications of PROCARTON, Lars Axrup, Director for Circular Solutions at Stora Enso, and Daniel Friedmann, P.Eng. MASc., Corporate Director at Solutum Technologies Ltd.    Below some key insights we took from them:    1️⃣ The paper packaging industry is deeply committed to sustainability, primarily relying on renewable resources and sidestreams from harvesting processes. A key principle is "fit-for-portion," which means using the least amount of material possible to reduce waste at every stage of production. This approach ensures that raw materials are minimized, creating a highly efficient manufacturing process.   2️⃣ The industry collaborates with scientists across Europe, engaging in studies to compare alternatives, ensuring that we remain at the forefront of environmental responsibility. This collaboration is crucial in maintaining a sustainable future by leveraging scientific data to improve practices.   3️⃣ One of the biggest challenges is ensuring that materials are recycled: once fiber materials are discarded into general waste bins, they are lost for good. The industry emphasizes the need for proper recycling systems, urging authorities and consumers alike to treat recyclable materials with care. Cooperation with national authorities is pivotal to reach ambitious recycling targets, such as the 90% goal.   4️⃣ With the upcoming Circular Economy Act in the EU, harmonization of legislations and of recycling practices across EU nations is necessary for achieving cohesive progress. From the consumer perspective, making recycling easy and valuable is a priority, as consumer behavior is critical to improving recycling rates.   5️⃣ Logistics and transportation are significant areas where sustainability can be improved. Decarbonizing the transportation of materials and ensuring efficient, CO2-neutral transport solutions are key goals. By focusing on a holistic view of the supply chain, the industry can make a significant impact on reducing its overall carbon footprint. Thank you, Libby Munford, for hosting such an insightful panel!

  • This should feel familiar... As reported by The Brussels Times now that #Tomorrowland is under way, reusable plastic cups can end up costing us more, literally!   Beyond the organisational flaws of the ‘returning your cup’ system at festivals or sporting events, we have also found that reusable plastic cups do not fulfil their original purpose: to reduce environmental impact.   So what is the more #sustainable solution?  Paper packaging! Indeed, much of the material used for these types of containers, whether for drinks or food, comes from certified renewable sources, is recycled and recyclable.   And for festivals as large as Tomorrowland (400.000 visitors this past weekend!), it could be the most practical, hygienic, and safe option. Reuse has its place, but let’s not forget that paper-based products can actually be the more sustainable option!  👉 Read here the full article. https://lnkd.in/eq-wkUy2   #PaperPackaging #RenewableSources #Recyclable #PracticalSolutions #EcoFestivals

  • Today, we’re celebrating #WorldEnvironmentDay at a time when thinking about the environment, packaging materials and formats is inescapably front of mind.    This year’s focus on #landrestoration, desertification and #droughtresilience calls for decisive action from European companies and governments.    Products need to be chosen according to their environmental impact throughout their life cycle. For instance, did you know that 93% of the water used to manufacture paper-based packaging is returned to the environment in good, clean condition?   What’s more, EPPA members source more than 90% of their products from sustainably #certifiedforests, and every day strive to innovate and invest in sustainable practices to help minimise your environmental footprint. Sustainable forestry practices, including reforestation, responsible soil management and combating biodiversity loss, are all core EPPA guiding principles.    #GenerationRestoration    If you want to dig deeper into the environmental benefits of paper-based packaging, click on this link to access EPPA’s corner for science practitioners ⤵ https://lnkd.in/e3gMEiy4

  • The European paper value chain is committed to the #EUGreenDeal and has placed sustainability at the centre of its operations. Consider these figures: 🌲 Forest Conservation: According to CEPI, in European pulp and paper making at least 74% of wood comes from sustainably certified forests. In the case of EPPA manufacturers, this number is over 90% and rising. CEPI data: https://lnkd.in/epCfrdbn 🌊 Water Stewardship: 93% of the water used in manufacturing paper-based packaging is returned to the environment in good condition. 🔆 Renewable Energy: 60% of the energy consumed during production is sourced from renewable sources. 🔄 Recycling Efforts: Over 80% of the paper consumed in Europe is recycled, with more than 60 million tonnes collected each year. As we head to a new legislative cycle, we call on EU policymakers to support innovations in the sector to raise these figures even further up. Want to learn more about single-use paper packaging? • Boosting paper recycling rates begins with ensuring the proper collection of paper and cardboard products. In recent weeks, Comieco, Italy’s Consortium for Paper Packaging Recovery and Recycling, has partnered with the garbage collection service Amiu Genova S.p.A. in the city of Genoa in a project aimed at achieving just that. Entitled, “Genoa… Where does all the paper and cardboard go? Together for Val Bisagno,” this project consists of a series of activities involving schools and residents. Through these engaging activities, children and adults learn the importance of separate waste collection while having fun. Comieco and Aimu Genova hope to improve the region’s paper recycling rates by reducing the quantity of paper and cardboard improperly disposed of. EU policymakers should encourage these types of at-scale voluntary initiatives to close the recycling loop.
