  • This should feel familiar... As reported by The Brussels Times now that #Tomorrowland is under way, reusable plastic cups can end up costing us more, literally!   Beyond the organisational flaws of the ‘returning your cup’ system at festivals or sporting events, we have also found that reusable plastic cups do not fulfil their original purpose: to reduce environmental impact.   So what is the more #sustainable solution?  Paper packaging! Indeed, much of the material used for these types of containers, whether for drinks or food, comes from certified renewable sources, is recycled and recyclable.   And for festivals as large as Tomorrowland (400.000 visitors this past weekend!), it could be the most practical, hygienic, and safe option. Reuse has its place, but let’s not forget that paper-based products can actually be the more sustainable option!  👉 Read here the full article. https://lnkd.in/eq-wkUy2   #PaperPackaging #RenewableSources #Recyclable #PracticalSolutions #EcoFestivals

  • Today, we’re celebrating #WorldEnvironmentDay at a time when thinking about the environment, packaging materials and formats is inescapably front of mind.    This year’s focus on #landrestoration, desertification and #droughtresilience calls for decisive action from European companies and governments.    Products need to be chosen according to their environmental impact throughout their life cycle. For instance, did you know that 93% of the water used to manufacture paper-based packaging is returned to the environment in good, clean condition?   What’s more, EPPA members source more than 90% of their products from sustainably #certifiedforests, and every day strive to innovate and invest in sustainable practices to help minimise your environmental footprint. Sustainable forestry practices, including reforestation, responsible soil management and combating biodiversity loss, are all core EPPA guiding principles.    #GenerationRestoration    If you want to dig deeper into the environmental benefits of paper-based packaging, click on this link to access EPPA’s corner for science practitioners ⤵ https://lnkd.in/e3gMEiy4

  • The European paper value chain is committed to the #EUGreenDeal and has placed sustainability at the centre of its operations. Consider these figures: 🌲 Forest Conservation: According to CEPI, in European pulp and paper making at least 74% of wood comes from sustainably certified forests. In the case of EPPA manufacturers, this number is over 90% and rising. CEPI data: https://lnkd.in/epCfrdbn 🌊 Water Stewardship: 93% of the water used in manufacturing paper-based packaging is returned to the environment in good condition. 🔆 Renewable Energy: 60% of the energy consumed during production is sourced from renewable sources. 🔄 Recycling Efforts: Over 80% of the paper consumed in Europe is recycled, with more than 60 million tonnes collected each year. As we head to a new legislative cycle, we call on EU policymakers to support innovations in the sector to raise these figures even further up. Want to learn more about single-use paper packaging? • Boosting paper recycling rates begins with ensuring the proper collection of paper and cardboard products. In recent weeks, Comieco, Italy’s Consortium for Paper Packaging Recovery and Recycling, has partnered with the garbage collection service Amiu Genova S.p.A. in the city of Genoa in a project aimed at achieving just that. Entitled, “Genoa… Where does all the paper and cardboard go? Together for Val Bisagno,” this project consists of a series of activities involving schools and residents. Through these engaging activities, children and adults learn the importance of separate waste collection while having fun. Comieco and Aimu Genova hope to improve the region’s paper recycling rates by reducing the quantity of paper and cardboard improperly disposed of. EU policymakers should encourage these types of at-scale voluntary initiatives to close the recycling loop. 👏 💚 Let's raise our paper cups to a fantastic achievement in Dublin! Since we launched 6 months ago, we've successfully collected 95,200 paper cups ready for recycling! This achievement is not just a number; it's a testament to the power of collective action in building a more sustainable future.💚👏 By choosing to recycle our paper cups, we're not only diverting waste from landfills but also conserving valuable resources and reducing our environmental impact. Every cup recycled represents a step forward in our journey towards a greener, cleaner Dublin. It's a reminder that each small action adds up to make a significant difference in our community and beyond. A huge thank you to the dedication and commitment of individuals and businesses across the city – we couldn't have done this without you. Let's continue this momentum and inspire even more individuals and businesses to join us in our recycling efforts. Together, we can make change happen – no cup left behind! #RecyclingMilestone #Dublin #TheCupCollective #GreenFuture #Recycling

  • In a thought-provoking op-ed in EMBALLAGE DIGEST, EPPA Treasurer David Schisler takes stock of the economic implications of France’s #LoiAGEC on French restaurants and consumers. Since its enforcement in January 2023, the AGEC law mandates establishments with more than 20 seats to adopt expensive and hard-to-recycle reusable packaging for in-door consumption. Unfortunately, as David highlights, this measure triggered a triple inflationary effect on the French economy. 1️⃣ Restaurants bear the brunt of this measure. According to the French Fast Food Union (SNARR), the switch to reusables has cost restaurants up to €100,000 per establishment. 2️⃣ Consumers’ wallets feel the impact as well, with the higher costs of reusables translating to higher market prices for products. A recent guide published by the city of Paris confirms that a reusable cup costs 8 to 23 times more per use than a paper cup. 3️⃣ The entire paper packaging value chain is also affected due to the extended producer responsibility scheme, which requires operators to finance not only paper collection and recycling but also the collection, washing, and transportation of reusable alternatives, many of which are made of plastic. These contrasting impacts call for a rethink. Why support reusable solutions made from fossil fuel and penalise packaging solutions made of recyclable and renewable material? • Reliable science requires robust data. We are proud to share an invaluable resource for life cycle analysis practitioners: a comprehensive Life Cycle Inventory with most up-to-date data on #paperpackaging. We worked closely with the technical consultancy Ramboll and our members to collect the data and conduct the comprehensive Life Cycle Inventory (LCI). To ensure the data is robust, a senior LCA expert from the Research Institutes of Sweden (RISE) conducted quality assurance on the study. Moreover, a senior LCA practitioner at ifeu – Institut für Energie- und Umweltforschung Heidelberg gGmbH (Germany) provided an independent third-party review. This LCI report offers a detailed examination of the following paper grades and their corresponding representative tableware products: ➡️ Converted virgin fiber bleached food service board, coated: Production and conversion into hot and cold drink cups, lids, ice cream cups, and salad boxes. ➡️ Converted partially recycled food service board: Production and conversion into clamshells and fry boxes. ➡️ Converted oil-resistant bleached food service paper with barrier: Production and conversion into burger wraps and fry bags. The report documents all stages of the material production and converting phases, encompassing raw material extraction, transportation, processing, and waste management. This gate-to-gate approach provides a holistic understanding of the environmental implications of these paper packaging products. Download the dataset here: https://lnkd.in/e3gMEiy4

  • Recycling initiatives such as #TheCupCollective can meaningfully contribute to the circular economy. This cross-sector initiative, active in five EU countries, aims to increase paper cup recycling to an industrial scale by creating the necessary collection infrastructure to significantly increase the recycling rate of wood fibre in paper cups. In Dublin, the programme has attracted county-wide support after its launch in October 2023, with 16 sites already participating in the scheme across the Irish capital. After being collected in special bins, paper cups are transported to the James Cropper paper mill, where they are then recycled and transformed into new paper products. Results speak for themselves.  ➡️ Between October 2023 and March 2024, nearly 73,000 cups were collected in Dublin.  ➡️ In October alone, recycling rates went up to 19.4% for paper cups on Dublin sites! EU policymakers should reflect on these inspiring achievements to establish a truly circular economy.
