The ERC funds top researchers in Europe, of any nationality, helping them pursue great ideas at frontiers of knowledge.
About us
Set up in 2007 by the European Union, the European Research Council (ERC) aims to stimulate scientific excellence in Europe by encouraging competition for funding between the very best, creative researchers of any nationality and age from anywhere in the world. As part of Horizon Europe, the EU programme for research and innovation for 2021 to 2027, the ERC has a total budget of over €16 billion. The ERC has an 'investigator-driven', 'bottom-up' approach, which allows researchers to identify new opportunities in any field of research (Physical Sciences and Engineering, Life Sciences and Social Sciences and Humanities). On the sole basis of excellence, the ERC provides attractive long-term funding to individual top scientists and their teams to pursue ground-breaking research. The funded projects are expected to lead to scientific advances and to set clear and inspirational targets for frontier research across the world. By supporting the brightest minds, the ERC grants help to bring about new and unpredictable scientific and technological discoveries in Europe.

Across Europe, ERC grantees are doing more than just advancing knowledge - they spark conversations, connect with the public, and help shape the policies that impact us all. In the latest ERC Magazine, the 2024 ERC Public Engagement with Research Awards (PERA) winners reflect on the most memorable times they engaged with the public about their science, sharing insights and offering their best advice for fostering meaningful connections. Luke O’Neill, ERC Scientific Council member, sums it up perfectly as he reflects on the importance of taking science out of the ivory tower: 'As more researchers embrace the challenge of making science accessible, we can look forward to a future where scientific discoveries are not just made but also understood and celebrated by all.' 💬 Curious to explore how frontier research is bridging the gap between science and society? Pietro Valdastri from University of Leeds together with other research teams developed a small #magnetic robot capable of generating high-resolution 3D #ultrasound images from deep inside the body. This could help improve early #cancer detection by enabling ‘virtual biopsies’ - non-invasive scans that provide immediate diagnostic data. The technology, based on a 3D shape called an #oloid, allows for precise movement inside the body and may assist in detecting and assessing colorectal cancer in a single procedure. The European Research Council and the EIC - European Innovation Council have adopted a joint statement, published today: We are delighted with the broad European consensus that has emerged over the past year on the strategic role of research and innovation (R&I) for Europe’s competitiveness; from the Mario Draghi report and the European Commission Political Guidelines to the report on the independent expert group chaired by Manuel Heitor, the Warsaw Declaration and the European Parliament resolution, presented by MEP Christian Ehler. All highlighted the crucial role of the European Research Council (ERC) and the European Innovation Council (EIC). We are pleased that our efforts to serve our respective communities are recognised. The EIC and the ERC have well-aligned systems and have built bridges between their respective funding schemes. The high number of ERC Proof of Concept projects amongst the winners of EIC Transition grants bears witness to this. Many ERC grantees have successfully scaled up their start-ups with EIC Accelerator funding. The ERC and the EIC, each with their own unique objectives, therefore offer complementary support to the European research and innovation ecosystem. The mission of the ERC is to encourage the highest quality research in Europe across all fields, based on scientific excellence, for the sake of furthering human knowledge. The role of the EIC is to identify, develop and scale up breakthrough technologies and innovations, whether they originate from the ERC, other parts of the framework programme or from regional or national funding programmes. This diversity is one of Europe’s strengths and should be reinforced. It is also vital that the budgets for the EIC and the ERC be increased to ensure substantial, attractive funding and more reasonable success rates for applicants. These budgets must be ringfenced in future EU R&I framework programme (FP10), even if included in an envisaged Competitiveness Fund. It is also vital for both the ERC and the EIC to have a clear mandate, independence and agility in governance and operations to maintain the highest standards of tailored support to Europe’s deep-tech start-ups and excellent researchers. We remain fully committed to ensure that the EIC and the ERC support the best European talent. We look forward to harvesting the benefits of further cooperation to reinforce this shared community. To make Europe competitive, we must continue to ensure that excellent, ground-breaking scientific discoveries translate into marketable and impactful innovations. Frontier research and innovation are essential for a prosperous future for Europe.
