  • The #AIAct is a huge milestone for the EU!        Regulating a technology in constant evolution is challenging, but science is at the heart of EU policies. Independent, evidence-based research produced by the Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) has been fundamental in informing the AI Act.       Scientists have contributed to the Act by:   ✔ Researching the societal impact of algorithms to provide scientific ground to policy.   ✔ Providing a clear terminology for key concepts.   ✔ Suggesting criteria to classify AI systems based on risk.   ✔ Proposing a framework for the documentation of high-risk AI use cases.   ✔ Shaping a set of harmonised AI standards with European standardisation bodies.       The AI Act sets the bar for regulating artificial intelligence worldwide. It also reflects the European way of doing it – enabling innovation while protecting citizens’ rights.   Emilia Gómez explains it below 👇      #ArtificialIntelligence  #Science4Policy EU Digital & Tech

  • Graphene is the world’s thinnest material – 1 million times thinner than a human hair. It is also very strong, stronger than both steel and diamond. Over the past decade, #EUFunded research has advanced graphene from lab to industry. This has generated significant economic impact, created thousands of jobs, and established Europe as a leader in #graphene technology, crucial for future innovation and sustainability. • ✨ Measuring societal impact of research with the Impact Track tool! But what is this tool? Research across the globe is contributing to addressing complex societal challenges. Effective impact measurement and management are crucial to truly valorise knowledge and to improve and sustain new solutions. However, this remains a significant challenge for many organisations. The Social Innovation Factory and Impact Track have been at the forefront of tackling this issue and developed an online tool which provides elements to measure societal impact in a user-friendly way. Our upcoming webcast dedicated to the societal impact of research results will feature a presentation by Tomas De Groote, Impact Coach at Social Innovation Factory, who will provide deeper insight into the Impact Track tool and discuss strategies for effective impact measurement and management: europa.eu/!4MCBpy #KnowledgeValorisation #ResearchImpactEU

  • Standards in the #AI regulation. Here’s why!    Standards serve as a backbone for trustworthy AI and a key reference for AI regulation.     They:  1. Help AI providers comply with legal requirements.  2. Capture in technical terms how to make AI systems safe and trustworthy. If we get it right, we can ensure AI systems that are both innovative and safe, in the EU and beyond!    Josep Soler Garrido tells us more about the role of science in the AI regulation in the video below 👇    #AIAct #EUScience #Science4Policy #EthicalAI EU Digital & Tech

  • In the face of climate change, The Harmonia project is using #artificialintelligence and satellite data to increase the preparedness and response mechanism of Europe's urban landscapes, placing a strong emphasis on the sustainable development of cities, and human and ecosystems’ health: europa.eu/!XnNvHh 🌆 Leveraging the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS), HARMONIA integrates vast climate and urban data with advanced AI to create the Integrated Resilience Assessment Platform. This tool is key for city planners and policymakers, providing real-time insights into multi-hazard risks and enabling strategic, data-driven decisions. 🌍 With a focus on sustainable development, HARMONIA's platform identifies risk patterns, such as urban heat islands and flood-prone zones, and forecasts health-related risk factors. These insights guide interventions to enhance the health and safety of urban communities. 🤝 Collaboration is at the core of HARMONIA. Architects, engineers, and urban stakeholders unite to co-design solutions that prioritize ecosystem health and resilient infrastructure. As HARMONIA advances, its contributions to climate-resilient urban planning set new standards, ensuring our cities remain vibrant and liveable for future generations. #MissionAdaptation #ClimateChange Explore this and other projects of the Cities Mission here: europa.eu/!gvWVrx

  • Simultaneous state aid in support of net-zero industries can benefit EU’s economy! The geopolitical developments of the last few years call for more and more coordinated responses from Member States. Given the risk of reduced EU competitiveness due to China and US’s heavy subsidies in net-zero technologies, how can EU countries support their industries? Our analysis shows that simultaneous state aid to support net-zero-related industries by multiple Member States results in a positive economic impact at both the EU and country levels. • Information exchange between countries in the Mediterranean region is crucial, especially in identifying any potential shortages in crop production. It helps identifying and addressing market distortions on time.   That is the job of MED-Amin (Mediterranean Agricultural Market Information Network), coordinated by CIHEAM. Our experts are in charge of the scientific supervision, including early harvest forecasting. For example, the map below shows the state of durum wheat in the region nearing the harvesting period, in June 2024. Such crop monitoring can provide an early assessment of crop conditions and yield potential. Considering that the countries shown on the map collectively produce about 51% of the global durum wheat, these assessments are important beyond the region.   Find the latest MED-Amin bulletin: https://lnkd.in/e9pDEs6x #Mediterranean #Crops #wheat #FoodProduction #EUScience FAO Francois Kayitakire Ana Ruiz Moreno irene biavetti Andrea Carbotti

  • Making Europe more resilient to climate change – this is the goal of the RESIST Project. This initiative funded under the EU Adaptation to Climate Change Mission protects European regions from the escalating threats of climate change. How? 🔗 By fostering collaborations across Europe, RESIST uniquely pairs regions to exchange best practices and develop bespoke resilience strategies. As each city grapples with distinct climate hazards—from Spain's floods to Greece's wildfires— RESIST's approach is rooted in the recognition that one-size-fits-all is not an option. 🏙️ At the heart of this project is the commitment to not just respond to climate impacts but to proactively prepare for them. Through the synergy of 1️⃣2️⃣ European regions, RESIST leverages local socio-economic profiles to drive the creation of over 1️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ innovative climate adaptation solutions: europa.eu/!dWR6kk 🤝 Embracing the 'quintuple helix' model, the project integrates academia, industry, government, citizens, and the environment, ensuring that solutions are sustainable and community focused. #ClimateResilience #MissionAdaptation #EUInnovation Find out more about this and other projects of the Cities Mission here: europa.eu/!gvWVrx
