  • 🌿 To strengthen our Chinese spice portfolio, our team at the origin has been conducting annual crop surveys for Szechuan pepper (prickly ash), ginger, and star anise.   🔍 The Szechuan pepper supply chain has been facing challenges with pesticide use. However, by collaborating with  top-tier partners at the origin, we are now able to supply fully EU-compliant materials once again. A strong focus on agricultural practices and rigorous monitoring of raw materials and finished goods have enabled us to resume the supply of Szechuan pepper.   ⭐ Star anise is predominantly grown in Guangxi province, which borders Vietnam. China has historically lacked regional processing capabilities, so we have started partnering with our main ginger supplier to address this gap. Through this supply chain setup, we now oversee a top-grade, hand-selected material that complies with MRLs.   🌱 Chinese ginger is experiencing growing demand due to crop failures and shortages in Nigeria and India. In response, China has increased its planting acreage to meet demand and is rapidly advancing its processing capabilities. The rich flavour and vibrant colour give Chinese ginger a unique profile and a pleasant aroma.

🌱Bell Pepper Crop Update 🌱   As the bell pepper crop dehydration season nears its end, our most recent crop survey highlighted several challenges in the field. For the second year in a row, planting acreage has decreased, and frequent rains are causing rotting and delays in harvesting. With only 55-60% of dehydration capacity in use, many facilities are opting to dry tomatoes instead.   The reduced yield, combined with rising costs, is leading to significant price increases—approximately 40% higher compared to last year. While global demand for bell pepper flakes remains strong, it is estimated that the total output will only meet half of that demand.   Amid these challenges, the adoption of the Farm Sustainability Assessment (FSA) is proving to be a crucial tool for farmers. By using FSA certification, bell pepper growers are better able to manage agrochemical use, reduce environmental impact, and optimize their farming practices despite the volatile weather conditions.    The FSA’s focus on sustainable agriculture ensures that farmers can monitor and improve their use of inputs like fertilizers and pesticides, promoting both crop health and environmental stewardship.

  • 🌱 Sustaining Growth in the Chinese Onion Market with the FSA Certification 🌱   The Chinese onion market is set for a significant year in 2024, with planting acreage up by 10% to 15%, making it the second-largest onion planting in China. As the carry-over stocks ran dry and global demands for Chinese onion surge, we’re happy to announce the onion harvest is now at full swing and first materials are entering the market. Harvest commences at lower altitude areas and eventually finishes around October in the highest altitude areas. Yields and dehydration volumes are therefore yet unknown.    To ensure the long-term viability and resilience of our supply chains, it’s crucial to integrate sustainable farming practices. European & China Spice Services are transitioning their onion supply chains to the Farm Sustainability Assessment (FSA) by SAI Platform. By adopting the FSA, onion growers can not only track and verify their sustainable practices but also improve their farming methods through targeted guidance and continuous learning.   The FSA helps farmers in our supply chains maintain profitability while safeguarding the environment and surrounding communities. This transparency in sustainable practices allows stakeholders to make informed decisions, fostering a more resilient and sustainable supply chain. #FarmSustainabilityAssessment #Traceability #SAIPlatform #OnionMarket #SustainableFarming

🌱 Ensuring Garlic Supply Chain Traceability with the FSA by SAI 🌱 🌾 With an increase in planting and an estimated 10% decrease in yield, we observe a similar availability of garlic as last year. With more smaller bulbs available for dehydration, price corrections took place in May and early July when mass dehydration ocurred. Buying activity recently caused the market to increase again.  🏢 European & China Spice Services are transitioning their garlic supply chains to the Farm Sustainability Assessment (FSA) by SAI Platform. This ensures robust supply chain traceability, allowing stakeholders to track and verify the sustainability of their garlic sources. This transparency supports more informed decision-making and fosters a resilient, sustainable supply chain.      🌿 Last week, the ESS team visited Rosemary fields in Morocco🌿   Exploring these fields provided invaluable insights into sustainable agriculture and the meticulous processes behind rosemary cultivation. This resilient herb thrives in minimal water environments, making it perfect for sustainable farming.   In Morocco, rosemary grows wild in the mountains. Harvesting requires government permits and is a precise art. Villagers harvest just before flowering, ensuring peak essential oil content. Natural air-drying preserves its aroma and nutritional properties, before processing it to food grade quality.   This agricultural trip highlighted the active and sustainable harvesting practices in Morocco, meeting our supply requirements. We deeply appreciate the efforts of our dedicated suppliers at the origin for their hard work and commitment to quality.
