Last week, at ASTA’s Regulatory Workshop, attendees benefited from exclusive regulatory insights directly from U.S. Government Officials, including U.S. Customs & Border Protection's Felicia Pullam, Jennifer McCadney, and Dennis McKenzie. We also heard from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s Susan Bartow, Linda Arrington, and Julie Javier on the agency’s most recent updates on ethylene oxide (EtO) regulations for spices. ASTA was honored to welcome FDA Deputy Commissioner for Human Foods James (Jim) Jones as the Keynote Speaker for the 2024 Regulatory Workshop last week. Deputy Commissioner Jones offered insightful remarks regarding FDA’s priorities for ensuring the safety of imported foods, with a focus on chemical contaminants and adulteration, and discussed how FDA’s reorganization will better position the agency to protect the food supply.

ASTA would like to thank Heifer International and the Embassy of Guatemala for making our Discussion and Reception Celebrating a Path to Sustainable Spices at the Guatemalan Ambassador’s Residence such a success! Attendees immersed themselves in Guatemalan culture and cuisine while enjoying insightful remarks from the Guatemalan Embassy’s trade counselor and learning about Heifer International’s sustainability initiatives with local spice farmers at origin in the Alta Verapaz region. The reception was one of the many unique networking opportunities at last week’s Regulatory Workshop, where attendees had the opportunity to connect with fellow industry professionals and forge lasting connections. During ASTA’s Regulatory Workshop, earlier this week, we held interactive sessions on combatting food fraud, conducting hazard analysis for heavy metals, and promoting food safety culture throughout the supply chain. The roundtable discussion was an excellent opportunity for workshop attendees to connect with industry colleagues while learning more about these critical issues in the spice industry. Tuesday was the first day of ASTA’s Regulatory Workshop, which convened the spice industry with regulatory experts, U.S. government officials, and policymakers to discuss vital topics related to food safety and regulatory compliance for spices. Tuesday’s programming featured a variety of presentations by subject matter experts including @Tony Pavel, Maile Gradison, Natalie Rainer, Ivan Wasserman, Robert Durkin, Craig M Johnson, Christopher Clausen, and John Spink, to name a few. Attendees also heard from ASTA Executive Director, Laura Shumow and Sr. Regulatory and Scientific Affairs Manager, Shannen Kelly on the latest advocacy and regulatory updates as well as association happenings. We held our leadership workshop with the ASTA board and committee chairs on Monday. ASTA leadership toured the Library of Congress and discussed strategic plans for the association’s future as well as ongoing initiatives to continue to advance the spice industry and ensure the supply of pure, safe spice to American consumers.
