A big thank you to Road Safety Support for awarding ETSC's Executive Director Antonio Avenoso with a lifetime achievement award last month.

Following the invitation of the Permanent Committee of Production and Trade of the Hellenic Parliament, representing Road Safety Institute (RSI) Panos Mylonas, I was challenged to present the RSI views related to the new law of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport concerning the contract ratification for the Services’ Concession on funding, maintenance and operations of Attiki Odos Motorway to GEK TERNA Group of Companies. Representing the Institute, I focused on the safety issues setting Road Safety as an ultimate priority; safety of the road users, the environmental footprint and the corporate social responsibility of the concessionaire should be highly considered. Highlighting the value and high performance of Attiki Odos and the other Hellenic Motorways ranking highest in safety among EU motorways, I put spotlight on road safety, maintaining also the safety of the road users during the transition period, strengthening also and securing safety in the years to come. Considering the role of the stakeholders present at the Parliament I had the opportunity to invite the Minister and decision makers for their commitment to support actions that can reduce deaths and injures working in collaboration with stakeholders and the Road Safety community towards “Vision Zero” recommending the EU’s 2030 targets to reduce road deaths and serious injuries by 50% by 2030 and the implementation of EU national measures to help advance those targets. One reason they go through IVA is that they wouldn’t comply with [mainstream regulations]. “The Ram has two things against it. One, size, and two, shape. In New Zealand the government is planning to raise speed limits in urban areas (to 50 km/h) and on rural roads (to up to 120 km/h), saying they are just following international norms. ETSC's Antonio Avenoso was interviewed by Radio New Zealand and set the record straight on why 30 km/h is the right speed limit for urban areas, and 70 km/h for rural roads that lack central barriers.
