🌐 Last November, WHO Europe and IDF Europe co-signed a declaration to accelerate policy action on #diabetes. This declaration recalls existing commitments and urges Member States to take immediate and comprehensive action to improve diabetes detection, enhance the quality of care and achieve global diabetes targets by 2030. What surprised me the most was the increased interest of the people to participate in the screening procedures, as they were worried about their health status but didn’t have the opportunity to easily access a prevention programme. On this #InternationalYouthDay, we are excited to unveil the new logo of the YOURAH network—a symbol of unity, solidarity, and shared purpose among young people living with #diabetes across Europe. This new logo represents the values of our network: empathy, action, and togetherness. It serves as a reminder to listen to your heart, support others and drive positive change in the world. The unveiling of this logo is not just a visual update; it reaffirms YOURAH’s mission to #empower and unite the youth diabetes community. The symbol reflects the inclusive and accessible nature of our network, reminding us that every young person with diabetes has a voice that matters. It is a representation of #solidarity, emphasising that we are stronger together as we work to create a healthier and more inclusive society. YOURAH, supported by IDF Europe, is committed to strengthening the leadership and advocacy skills of young people living with diabetes. Our initiatives, like the Youth Leadership Camp (YLC) and later the Youth Leadership Lab (YLL), provide a platform for young advocates to connect, learn and collaborate on projects that address the needs of their communities. In today’s digital age, the youth are best equipped to use technology to amplify their voices and make a difference. Digital tools, such as social media, mobile apps and online platforms, are central to the advocacy efforts of YOURAH members and IDF Europe. These tools enable young people to connect with their peers, share their experiences and develop innovative solutions to the challenges they face. An example of this is the DYouth podcast, created by a group of active youth advocates during and after the 2023 Youth Leadership Lab, with the goal of connecting people living with diabetes across Europe, through shared experiences, challenges, and successes. You can read our interview with the YOURAH members behind the podcast here. The new YOURAH logo is a symbol that young people with diabetes can take with them wherever they go. It embodies the vision of a united #youth community, working together to break down barriers and drive lasting change. As we celebrate International Youth Day, we also celebrate the incredible potential of young leaders who are dedicated to shaping a better present and future for all people living with diabetes. “The new technology of course makes everything easier, but the hardest thing is never being able to really relax”. In an interview with WHO/Europe, Cajsa Lindberg told her story of battling type 1 #diabetes & brain #cancer at the same time. ⭐Two weeks ago we co-hosted, with the Dijabetološki savez Srbije (Serbian Diabetes Association) the 2024 IDF Europe Youth Leadership Lab (YLL). After several months of intense preparation, participants representing 18 countries joined us on this journey of learning, leadership and mutual #empowerment. Right from the first moment, it was pure magic! 👏Since its creation, the Lab has been a unique experience. Meeting young people from across Europe, who all live with Type 1 diabetes (#T1D) but in (sometimes very) different healthcare systems, is an unforgettable opportunity. Gaining an understanding of differences in access to treatment, technology, education and support, but also of the shared experiences is not only an inspiration for future initiatives but also a strong motivation for enhanced and long-term engagement in the #diabetes community. 🧭Building on the success of previous camps, the programme focused on project management, #leadership styles, #advocacy and communication with policymakers. 🚀Special highlights of this year include the ‘Language Matters and Unites” session, the debate on “Volunteering and Fair Compensation” and the integration of the near-peer mentorship approach into the programme, turning the mentoring concept into a two-way learning opportunity for both participants and mentors. The evening sessions undoubtedly contributed to alleviating feelings of loneliness, building trust and mutual understanding, and creating lifelong connections and friendships, whilst group work helped foster a sense of team spirit and cooperation. 🔵While this year’s YLL has ended, this is just the beginning of a fantastic and promising advocacy journey for many of the participants. More than ever, we are sincerely convinced that such an engaged network of youth advocates will not only shape the future but is already leading the diabetes debate. 🤝We thank the Dijabetološki savez Srbije for their warm welcome, we want to thank the mentors and faculty for their engagement and shared passion. We also want to thank each and every participant for their enthusiasm, for embracing the project with such passion, and for making this YLL an unforgettable experience!
