🌟 What an incredible start to the #ParisOlympics2024! 🌟 Did you know that our experts at Tractebel company IMDC, played a crucial role in the opening ceremony? Our team, in collaboration with Waterbouwkundig Laboratorium and Ghent University, ensured the skippers of the nautical parade were expertly trained to navigate the Seine River. 🛥️✨ IMDC contributed by computing the 2D flow fields of the Seine River, which were integrated into simulators developed with our partners. These simulators were part of a study on navigation conditions in Paris for Voies navigables de France (VNF), addressing aspects like boat dimensions, flood period restrictions, and navigation regulations. 📊🌍 Witnessing the seamless performance of the 85 skilled skippers during the opening ceremony was a proud moment for us all! 🎉👏 Huge congratulations to Waterbouwkundig Laboratorium for leading this task to such a beautiful outcome. The #ParisOlympics2024 are well underway. 🎉    At IMDC, we already had a part in the successful opening ceremony with our contribution to the shipping simulator for the Seine but our advisory role at the Olympics continues.     Through a collaboration with Belgian Cycling, we are supporting the riders and staff with our MyRacewind wind app 🚴♂️💨. As of 1st August 2024, Annelies Bolle is appointed as General Manager of IMDC. Annelies will replace Patrick BRUGGEMANS, who has accepted a new challenge within TRACTEBEL where his profile and skills will for sure also be an added value. Having joined IMDC in 2007 as coastal engineer, Annelies has been part of the company’s development over time and has by now a long track-record in the water and environment sector. “The critical mindset and open-minded culture of our experts is one of the success factors of IMDC to develop sustainable and innovative water and environmental solutions, and to contribute as such to a more resilient world” Annelies said. On Friday the 26th, the opening ceremony of the #ParisOlympics2024 went off without a hitch! 🏆 This success is a testament to the weeks of practice by 85 skilled skippers using portable simulators built by Waterbouwkundig Laboratorium The simulators were built leveraging on our previous experience on a study of the navigation conditions in the crossing of Paris for Voies navigables de France. In this study for VNF, we investigated the potential evolution of navigation regulations in Paris, covering aspects like maximum allowable boat dimensions, flood period restrictions, authorized speeds, no-overtaking zones, and turning possibilities. Throughout this project, IMDC, Universiteit Gent and Flanders Hydraulics examined various scenarios using the navigation simulators at Flanders Hydraulics Research in Antwerp. IMDC supported by computing the 2D flow fields of the Seine River that were integrated in the simulators. Over the past two months, our Monitoring team at IMDC embarked on a series of comprehensive 13-hour monitoring campaigns in the Scheldt estuary, as part of the OMES program (Environmental Impact Research Program of the Sigma Plan) commissioned by De Vlaamse Waterweg nv. Initiated in 1995, The OMES program has been instrumental in increasing and updating the knowledge of the ecosystem in the Zeeschelde. In addition to the yearly 13-hour campaigns the program incorporates monthly 3-day campaigns conducted at specific locations along the Zeeschelde, Rupel, Nete and Dijle rivers. IMDC’s responsibility is to determine the flow rates, water volumes, sediment fluxes, and sediment loads, contributing to a deeper understanding of this crucial waterway. Through comprehensive research and monitoring programs like OMES, and as part of the cross-border MONEOS monitoring program, Flemish water managers and scientists are keeping a close watch on the Schelde estuary's water quality, quantity, and diverse ecosystem. This collaborative effort is essential for preserving our natural heritage and ensuring a sustainable future for the estuary that is so integral to our community. It's an honor to work alongside esteemed partners such as ECOSPHERE UAntwerp, Ghent University, VLIZ - Flanders Marine Institute, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Amicale GC Université Paul Sabatier, and with support of Waterbouwkundig Laboratorium and VLOOT.
