Today, we had the honor of welcoming Pedro Sánchez, Prime Minister of Spain, and Alexander De Croo, Prime Minister of Belgium, to imec, as we take another important step forward in EU semiconductor innovation with discussing the potential expansion of imec’s research infrastructure in Spain. Pedro Sánchez emphasized the transformative potential of a research infrastructure of imec in Malaga, stating: "This initiative will strengthen Spain’s science system and represent a truly European project in one of the most strategic sectors. With imec’s expertise in advanced processes and materials, this marks a significant step forward, and we are excited about the opportunities it presents." Alexander De Croo highlighted the European spirit behind this collaboration: "Imec’s expertise is unique, and we’re excited to collaborate with Spain, in Malaga, to build on the talents we have across Europe. The EU Chips Act empowers us to invest in places with strong potential for R&D, and this collaboration shows it’s about unleashing human talent, which is what drives Europe forward." Luc Van den hove, CEO of imec, added, "Establishing a 300mm R&D process line for specialized chip technologies in Malaga will strengthen Spain’s ecosystem and enhance our leadership in the global chip sector. This facility will drive innovation in healthcare, life sciences, photonics, and augmented and virtual reality." Together, we will harness the potential of this prospective partnership to create groundbreaking solutions that will benefit not only Spain and Belgium, but also the global community.

On October 10-11, the Automotive Chiplet Forum (ACF), formerly the Automotive Chiplet Alliance (ACA), took place at KLA in Ann Arbor, a vibrant hub for automotive and mobility innovation. The event attracted interest from key automotive players in the U.S., EU, Japan, and Taiwan, resulting in a waiting list a month in advance. During the forum, imec announced the launch of star (Semiconductor Talent and Automotive Research), a global network initiated by imec to foster R&D collaboration and support workforce development in the automotive semiconductor sector. Mstar, the U.S. chapter of star, is embedded in Michigan’s renowned automotive ecosystem, with founding partners including KLA, the University of Michigan, Washtenaw Community College, General Motors, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, and imec. Mstar focuses on advancing semiconductor research for autonomous and electric vehicles while strengthening the local workforce. Special thanks to KLA for hosting and to the mstar partners for their contributions to essential semiconductor technologies. Future star events, including the ACF, will be available exclusively to star members (www.star-semicon.com). The next ACF is scheduled to be hosted by Arm in Cambridge, UK (April 1-2, 2025).

🌍 World Mental Health Day 2024: A Space to Recharge at imec   At imec we prioritize mental wellbeing. That’s why we’ve created a silent room—a peaceful space where employees can recharge, reflect, and disconnect from the fast-paced workday.   This room is not just about quiet; it’s about fostering personal wellbeing while creating an accessible and respectful space for everyone. Through this, we further emphasize our commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion at imec.   Colleague Ahmed H. Bayoumi reflects on what the silent room means to him: "It wasn’t always easy to find a place to pray at imec, so I’m very happy that imec was open and enthusiastic about the idea of a new silent room. Having a space to pray at work, even for just 5 minutes a day, enhances my mental wellbeing and helps me maintain focus and balance during the workday. This step has greatly increased my sense of belonging to imec."   Let’s take this day to recognize the importance of mental health in all aspects of life.   #WorldMentalHealthDay #SilentRoom
