This morning Trouw published an article on integrated photonics as a solution for increasing data usage, AI prompts, and the associated energy demand. The article states that the Netherlands is leading in the world of integrated photonics. Still, the competition from abroad is catching up in terms of practical solutions and funding to grow. Eelko Brinkhoff, CEO PhotonDelta: “Europe still has a step to take, as was pointed out in the Draghi report bit.ly/3Y5yl3H. Europe’s position in advanced technologies is declining. When you see how difficult it is for successful start-up companies to raise more than €50 million compared to startups in the USA, the European Commission has its Chips Act, intended to strengthen the European chip industry and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers. However, it is almost impossible for smaller companies to compete for Chips Act funding. At the same time, European startups should bring more products to market.” Read more (in Dutch): https://lnkd.in/eVsMnXgJ #PIC #PhotonicChips #Funding #IntegratedPhotonics

More than 700 leaders from governments and the semiconductor and photonic chip industry are meeting in Eindhoven during PIC Summit Europe 2024 to discuss the future of the industry. The summit features keynotes and panels with leaders including the Acting Director Enabling and Emerging Technologies of the EU Commission Gustav Kalbe, Acting Director-General of Economic Affairs Tjerk Opmeer, Airbus Head of Technology Sytze Kampen, Principal Technology Analyst at Sony Faisal Kamran, and Head of Silicon Photonics at Nokia Bell Labs Nicolas Fontaine. Gustav Kalbe said, “You can see how ubiquitous applications for integrated photonics are becoming. They’re becoming a fundamental building block. The need is ever-increasing, and ever-critical because photonics underpins so many other technologies.” Eelko Brinkhoff, CEO of PhotonDelta, said: “Photonic chip technology offers solutions to big societal challenges in areas such as mobility, energy, climate change, food, and health. The hurdle we need to overcome is bringing these solutions to market faster. To do this, we need a holistic approach that combines public and private funding, entrepreneurship, and international cooperation. This is why PIC Summit Europe has placed a strong focus on stimulating cooperation between photonic and electronic chip industries, academics, industry leaders, policymakers, and value chain partners, from material suppliers to end-users. 🌍🚀 International PIC Hackathon Update: Kyoto University x Eindhoven University of Technology! Last week, the first-ever International PIC Hackathon kicked off in Japan with 15 PhD students. The Dutch delegation received a warm welcome from the Dutch Embassy, attended a conference to present their research, networked, and explored new collaborations. 🤝🎓 Visits to SHIMADZU CORPORATION and ROHM Co., Ltd. highlighted Japan’s cutting-edge tech ecosystem, sparking inspiration for future projects. This week, the students arrived in the Netherlands and were introduced to the thriving PhotonDelta ecosystem by PhotonDelta CEO, Eelko Brinkhoff. Now, it's time for the PIC technology challenge: designing integrated photonics point-source LEDs! Teams can earn extra points by exploring additional applications for this device that add value to the ecosystem, beyond the tech itself. The challenge is initiated by Dexerials Corporation, a Dutch-Japanese company. Alongside their hard work on the challenge, the students will also visit EFFECT Photonics and SMART Photonics. We can’t wait to see how the Hackathon unfolds—stay tuned! 🚀 #PIC #Hackathon #Innovation #GlobalCollaboration #TechEcosystem #PhDLife #Photonics #KyotoUniversity #TUEindhoven #SMARTPhotonics #EFFECTPhotonics
