#ICYMI IDF Dorector General, Laurence Rycken's word at the closing of the #IDFWDS2024: “'Proudly committed to a sustainable future' was the theme of this summit, and we have proved that commitment during these four days. What is a sustainable future for IDF? One were its three dimensions (social, economic and environmental) can coexist in harmony and balance, without unfair trade offs or compromises. One where 100% of the world’s population has access to food without compromising this access for the next generations. This is proudly embedded in our values and our strategic imperatives".

  • #ICYMI 6 important takeaways from the AMR session at #IDFWDS2024: 1 - Everyone along the dairy value chain has a role to play in reducing our dependence on antimicrobial agents. 2 - There is no single solution to AMR - many small but important steps that we can all take. 3 - Disease prevention is key to minimizing the need for antimicrobial agents. 4 - By being good stewards of antimicrobial agents we will retain the autonomy to use them when needed to protect animal health and welfare, and protect food safety. 5 - Despite differences in dairy production systems, the approach outlined in the revised Guide can be applied globally. 6 - By working with colleagues at WOAH and FAO we are confident that our messages are aligned and will resonate more strongly.

  • #ICYMI The session on Health Benefits of Dairy at the #IDFWDS2024 left 6 important key messages: 1. Dairy fats support cognitive health across the lifespan Recent research shows that dairy fats positively impact brain development and cognitive functions, particularly during early life. These effects may also help mitigate cognitive decline in older individuals, suggesting the potential of dairy fat in maintaining brain health throughout life. 2. Lactose tolerance can improve through gut microbiota adaptation While lactose intolerance is common globally, regular consumption of lactose can promote gut microbiota adaptations that reduce intolerance symptoms. This highlights the role of gut health in enhancing the body’s ability to tolerate lactose, benefiting individuals with reduced lactase activity. 3. Vitamin K in fermented dairy supports cardiovascular health Fermented dairy products, especially cheese, are emerging as important sources of Vitamin K, a nutrient increasingly recognized for its role in cardiovascular health. Research indicates that dairy, particularly grass-fed cheese, may improve Vitamin K status and contribute to better heart health. 4. Dairy is essential for health across all life stages Dairy products, such as milk, yoghurt, and cheese, provide critical nutrients that support growth, development, and health from childhood through old age. Nutrients like protein and calcium are vital for bone health in childhood, muscle preservation in older adults, and overall nutritional well-being throughout life. 5. Dairy consumption is a cost-effective public health intervention Dairy consumption is a cost-effective means of reducing the risk of falls and fractures, especially among older adults. Public health programs, such as school milk initiatives and dietary guidelines that include dairy, can make a significant impact on improving population health while reducing healthcare costs. 6. The dairy matrix contributes to cardiometabolic and gut health Fermented dairy products, such as yogurt, have been shown to positively impact gut microbiome health and reduce cardiometabolic risks like type 2 diabetes. The bioactive components in fermented dairy play a crucial role in modulating these health factors.
