Today’s fire safety is shifting towards data-driven, scientific methods, fueled by the need for greater accuracy, accountability, and cost-effectiveness. With increasing regulatory demands and a focus on fire incidents, the need for reliable and economic solutions conducted through modelling and simulation has never been more critical. By simulating complex fire scenarios with precision, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) allows us to move beyond back-of-the-envelope calculations and develop solutions tailored to real-world conditions. This approach helps us identify and mitigate hazards before they materialize, enhancing public safety and reducing costs. For our clients, CFD provides evidence-based designs that minimize liability and ensure compliance with ever-evolving regulations. At Jensen Hughes, our team includes numerous CFD and fire engineering experts who have been delivering CFD services for over 15 years. One of our key specialists in the Belgium office is Nazim YAKHOU, Lead Engineer and CFD Expert. By incorporating advanced digital tools and scientific analysis, Nazim enhances our approach to fire safety engineering. Get in touch with Nazim here: https://lnkd.in/eNx2wyXr

On the former site of St. Peter’s Hospital, a new Performing Arts Quarter, Podiumkunstensite - Leuven Performing Arts Quarter is designed and planned to be built in 2028. Designed by SERGISON BATES ARCHITECTS LLP, in collaboration with eld NV and Charcoalblue, this new cultural building will provide accessible and sustainable open spaces for performing arts and respond to the need for a cultural hub in Leuven. Jensen Hughes collaborated closely with the architecture team to provide fire safety from concept stage to design phases. We adopted a prescriptive approach to test the proposed design against current fire safety legislation and developed fire and evacuation simulations. In the 2016 edition of NFPA 409, Standard on Aircraft Hangars, firefighting foam was the primary extinguishing medium in various fire protection options. However, concerns have been raised about the environmental and health risks associated with polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF), prompting a reevaluation of foam-based fire suppression systems. Learn more in Senior Project Manager Martial Delplanche's blog, where he discusses AFFF alternatives and advancements in aircraft hangar fire protection systems. Many countries have banned the use of AFFF foam systems, creating a market opportunity for developing alternative materials and solutions. As regulations continue to evolve and awareness of the risks associated with AFFF increases, there is a growing emphasis on adopting performance and risk-based approaches to fire protection that prioritize safety, efficiency and sustainability. We're thrilled to share that we've been entrusted with the transformative renovation of the Nationale Bank van België headquarters in Brussels. The National Bank of Belgium plans to renovate its headquarters by 2030, creating a modern, sustainable workspace for its staff in Brussels. Following a public tender, the design was awarded to KAAN Architecten and LOW architecten (the Statuur consortium). The Bank's operations, currently spread across multiple buildings, no longer meet operational and energy efficiency standards. By consolidating staff into a single building, NBB1, the Bank will reduce its occupied surface area from 217,000 m2 to about 80,000 m2. Remote working practices further reduce the need for workstations. The NBB1 block, consisting of historical structures from the 1860s to the 1960s, requires a new vision to transform it into a future-oriented space. The renovation plan includes a spacious courtyard garden, strategic voids to enhance vertical relationships, and double-height ceilings to provide natural light and a sense of space. The renovation will transform NBB1 into a cutting-edge smart building, improving energy performance and optimizing space use with advanced smart systems. The result will be a modern, pleasant working environment for the Bank's staff. This ambitious plan reflects the Bank's commitment to combining contemporary elements with preserving historical values, resulting in a sustainable, open, and beautiful headquarters. Stay tuned for more updates as we embark on this journey towards 2030.
