“Our citizens’ continued welfare, security and environmental standards depend on a vibrant European economy. If we cannot close the competitiveness gap that has opened up, I am deeply concerned that the European way of life as we know it will face a decisive challenge,” Javier Ormazabal Echevarria, President of Orgalim. In 2024, EU GDP is forecast to grow by just 1%, compared with 2.4% in the US and 3.2% in the world as a whole. This slow growth puts Europe at risk of permanently falling behind the world’s leading economies. The Orgalim Council, made up of leaders of Europe’s high-tech manufacturing industries, has expressed its profound alarm over Europe's decline in competitiveness in a strong declaration that calls on EU leaders to show the political courage required to tackle the root of these problems. On the eve of the US elections, POLITICO Europe examines how Europe could be affected if Trump gains power and implements across-the-board tariffs of between 10-20% on all trade partners, as he's threatened to do. Orgalim Deputy Director General Olivier JANIN warned that increased tariffs would come as a double blow: “A portion of China’s exports to the U.S. would be diverted to Europe — where they would likely further increase the EU’s trade deficit with China for machinery and electrical equipment — and a portion would go to other markets where they would compete with European exports.” 👉 https://lnkd.in/e_AY8d94

What an interesting couple of days we’ve had at the #Orgalimconvention in #Helsinki! I’m going back with a lot of food for thoughts and this for me is a sign that it was time well spent. Yesterday we held our Policy Committee meeting where we had interesting discussions about #policypriorities for our industries, successful engagement with policymakers and #electrification of industry. Once and again it has been an important moment to embrace the diversity enshrined in our membership, acknowledging the difficulties that it entails but also recognising the richness that it brings. Today, we had the pleasure of attending the Millennium Technology Prize Forum where we heard prominent personalities and academics in various technology fields discussing how to make best use of technologies without losing control. And what an honour to see our DG Malte Lohan giving a compelling keynote speech on this fundamental question! #millenniumprize2024 I will remember this Convention also for the wonderful 🇫🇮 Finnish hospitality, especially from our member Teknologiateollisuus - Technology Industries of Finland, the beauty of Helsinki and the vivid blue sky!

It's been a fascinating morning at the #millenniumprize2024. We heard opening keynotes from Amandeep Singh Gill on how to ensure that technology leads us towards a #utopia and not a #dystopia and from Malte Lohan on how AI can help us consider different perspectives when making a moral judgment. Karl Deisseroth then wowed the audience with groundbreaking #biotech #research. Next, we listened to him discuss tricky ethical dilemmas and how to find the balance between regulation and innovation with Thierry Klein and Sabrina Maniscalco, led by Jason Palmer. Lastly, we heard quick-fire pitches from emerging researchers competing in the Millennium Young Scientist Contest 2024 - Iuliia Burdun, Ayşen Değerli Alishali, Bahar Mostafiz, Nidia Obscura Acosta, Pekko Tuominen. If these are the researchers of tomorrow, we have a lot to look forward to! 🤖 🧪🔬
