Last week, Reloop's Rob Kelman joined Zero Waste Network Aotearoa to discuss what a well-designed deposit return system would look like for New Zealand. 📺 Watch the entire session here: https://lnkd.in/etkhT3zz Polly Brownlee Sue Coutts
In case you missed it, catch an excerpt from our recent webinar! 🎥 Over 50 participants including recyclers, councils, businesses and organisations joined us to explore what a well-designed beverage deposit return scheme would look like for New Zealand. 👏 A big thank you to Lucci Hennah for hosting and to Seagull Centre for supporting Zero Waste Network Aotearoa with this important mahi. Here are some key takeaways. 💡 In this excerpt, one of our panelists Polly Brownlee shared the need to design NZ's scheme right, from the outset. It's not just about a single feature – it's the combination of convenience, performance, and practical targets checks and balances that will drive success. With these elements in place, New Zealand can achieve beverage container recovery rate of 85% or more, in line with international best practice. The good news is that the scheme already on the table incorporates these broad features. ♻️ New Zealand’s container return scheme needs a 20 cent refundable deposit – a strong enough incentive to encourage people to return drink containers and pick up littered ones to claim the refund. The scheme also needs to cover a range of drink containers and materials – including glass, plastic (PET, HDPE, PP), metal cans, and beverage cartons – for recycling or for reuse. We’re expecting a public consultation on the broader primary legislation in the coming months, and we will be working hard to make sure that the key features are embedded. 🌏 Next, Sue Coutts shared the importance of building a convenient and accessible return network. Stay tuned for more on this next week. We’d love to hear your thoughts! Reloop had the pleasure of participating in a thought-provoking event at the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw. The day brought together policy, art and history through a shared lens: plastics. It featured a lecture series alongside a guided tour of the 'Plastics: Bodies, Commodities, Fetishes from the Cold War to the Present' exhibition. The exhibition reflects on consumerism and pop culture across both affluent and marginalised societies, using a ‘plastic body’ metaphor for how imagery and desire reached people even behind the Iron Curtain. The lectures explored Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), with Professor Thomas Lindhqvist presenting the 'Why and How' of EPR and Reloop’s Anna Larsson offering insights on EPR trends in Europe. 🗣️ Commenting after the event, Anna said: “The EPR concept was developed because of the challenge with growing consumption and waste generation as well as some plastic packaging specs disabling recycling feasibility. The artistic expressions depicted at the Muzeum Sztuki Nowoczesnej w Warszawie | Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw make us reflect on the unintended consequences of economic growth.” A powerful reminder of the complex relationship between design, consumption and waste to the policies that shape our response.

A full house and a resounding success for our recent event "From PPWR towards a circular economy" sponsored by SERRED the European association of industrial packaging reconditioners. We extend our sincere gratitude to MEP Ingeborg ter Laak for hosting the event and to Aurel Ciobanu-Dordea 🇪🇺 and Maja Desgrees du Lou (European Commission), Sonia Pastore (German Chemical Industry Association VCI) and Clarissa Morawski (Reloop) for making this conference a remarkable achievement. 💡It's clear: much like sales packaging, industrial packaging can also be collected, reconditioned and reused, with substantial material, energy and carbon savings compared to the recycling process. ♻️Since the 70's, SERRED members have reconditioned in an environmentally responsible way millions of drums and IBCs used in industry, extending their useful lives of many cycles and recycling them when reuse is no longer possible. MEP Ingeborg ter Laak truly captured the spirit of the event by reminding the audience that "reconditioners are part of the solution" and need to be supported with the right legal and market framework - not held back by overregulation. The Commission also declared that the reconditioning sector is a champion industry and encouraged SERRED to put its expertise and knowledge at the service of the upcoming secondary legislation. A huge thank you also to our moderator Patrice Audibert, former Head of office of PPWR Rapporteur MEP Frédérique Ries, for expertly guiding the conversation and his ability to engage the audience. Looking forward to more inspiring moments ahead!
