About us
The Smart Ticketing Alliance (STA) was founded in 2015 as the follow up to the IFM project. The objective of STA is to promote and facilitate cooperation between national and regional Smart Ticketing schemes and to establish interoperable "Smart Ticketing" in Europe and elsewhere. Smart ticketing originated from the wish to have interoperability between upcoming regional and national public transport electronic ticketing systems. To achieve this, focus has been on the customer media while allowing for the concept of dynamic and multiple applications. The Alliance drives a coordinated effort towards global ticketing interoperability for the public transport sector. This includes the establishment of a trust scheme that mirrors the schemes used in the mobile phone industry, banking sector and with other stakeholders.

KG headquarters in Cologne. We would like to thank VDV eTicket for generously hosting our group and supporting our work to advance #smartticketing solutions. After a successful #InnoTrans in Berlin, we’re now back in force and just launched 🚀 the third edition of our STA #certification program 🚀 As some may remember, the third edition of our STA certification program was already launched in summer 2023 for #contactless cards and media (PICC). Since then, STA certification program has been revised, enriched and now extended to address also transit contactless readers and equipment (PCD). This Third edition is based on the ISO/IEC TS 24192 international #standard published in 2021 that replaces the historical CEN/TS 16794 standard. This certification program now gives vendors a unique opportunity to certify their ticketing contactless products against the latest ISO/IEC 14443 standards. For #publictransport stakeholders, STA certification program will help achieve interoperability between contactless readers or NFC mobile devices and transit contactless cards or contactless tickets. 📅 From end of August, an Edition 3 certification for PCD can be requested from STA certification bodies by vendors. ⏱During a transition period, both Edition 2 and Edition 3 certification request can be applied at the vendor’s choice for PICC and PCD. From February 28th, 2025 and onwards, only Edition 3 certification request for PICC and PCD will be accepted. 💡 Learn more about our certification program at https://lnkd.in/eq7TXujY.

At this year's InnoTrans in Berlin, our Chairman Ralph Gambetta delivered an engaging presentation on the national digital ticketing approaches across Europe. Ralph highlighted the diverse landscape of national initiatives, with many successful models already in place. As he pointed out: "There are many approaches that work extremely well in their respective countries, but they cannot simply be copied and applied elsewhere due to political, technical, and other differences between nations." At the Smart Ticketing Alliance, we’re focused on fostering collaboration and innovation to bridge gaps and work towards a more unified, interoperable ticketing future across Europe. Let's keep the conversation going! Join us and our Stakeholder dialogue on this topic #SmartTicketing #InnoTrans #Ticketing #Interoperability #PublicTransport
