S&D Member Irene Tinagli was elected today as Chair of the European Parliament's new Special Committee on Housing! Andreas Schieder will be our Coordinator on that committee. Congratulations to both of them! Together, we will strive to deliver affordable, decent, and sustainable homes for all. ✊ 🏠 🇪🇺

The housing market is out of control. 40 million Europeans struggle to pay rent or their mortgage. With the new special committee kicking off today, we begin parliamentary work to take care of this basic human right and help millions of families. Today, on Holocaust Remembrance Day, we pause and remember the six million Jews and other minorities murdered during the Holocaust. 80 years ago to the day, on 27 January 1945, the death camp of Auschwitz was liberated. As we listen to the survivors recalling the horrors of the Holocaust we vow to keep the memory alive. Remembrance will remind us of the dangers, whenever antisemitism, racism and hatred of minorities are raising their ugly heads again.   To truly honour the victims, we must keep the promise of “Never Again” alive by rejecting antisemitism and standing against all forms of hate in our society.   We remember today and always!   #neveragain #holocaustremembranceday

Today is the inauguration of Donald Trump as the next President of the US. Many are worried how the new Trump administration will affect the rest of the world. The USA remains a key strategic partner for the EU. We’re ready to work with the new administration on the myriad of challenges that our societies are facing. It’s time for Europe to stand up on the world stage. The EU is the most powerful trade bloc in the world. The EU was founded for peace and we are now a democratic community of values. And we won’t shy away from protecting our people and our values. Yes, we will protect our economic interests if necessary. Yes, we will protect our citizens’ data. Yes, we will continue to protect vulnerable groups online. The EU is a community of respect, of dignity. A place with a welfare state, worker’s rights. As Mark Zuckerberg seeks to curry favour with Donald Trump, as threats of tariffs circulate, as President Trump discusses invading sovereign territory - we’re clear that we’re the opposite of these things. The EU must remain united to safeguard democracy, our values and global stability.
