For its 75th anniversary, NATO has published a science-fiction graphic novel exploring what the world and NATO might look like in the future. The approach is less far-fetched than it might seem: After the 9/11 attack on the US in 2001, a commission found that the "most important failure was one of imagination”. Today, science fiction writers are helping NATO and its members bridge that creativity gap. https://bit.ly/47f6n9U

Amid civil unrest and competing claims of voter fraud, the EU has rejected Venezuela's Nicolás Maduro as winner of the presidential election. But it isn't recognising his opponent, Edmundo González, either. That’s not good enough for Nelson Dordelly Rosales, who volunteers as a special advisor on EU affairs for the Venezuelan opposition group, Plataforma Unitaria Democrática. He talked to The Parliament about the current situation. https://bit.ly/4cW3ufw

Since assuming the presidency in Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian has said his country and the EU "have a shared interest in promoting regional stability and security." His reformist appearance, however, cannot paper over significant disagreements. How much can Pezeshkian assuage EU concerns with state-sponsored terrorism, nuclear development and human rights? https://bit.ly/3yDtqOV

“It’s important to listen to what countries want and what countries say, rather than just say: 'You need this,'" says David Heymann, professor of Infectious Disease Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, U. of London. As the EU shapes its response to the new mpox strain, clade 1b, here's a look what the EU learned from Covid and how it's helping affected regions. https://bit.ly/3Z1X5vS

NATO members' decade-long deadline to spend at least 2% of GDP on defence is up this year. Of the 32 allies, 23 are expected to meet or exceed the target. And Poland is way out in front — at 4.12%. The former Warsaw Pact country, which shares borders with the Baltics, Ukraine, Kremlin-ally Belarus and the Russian exclave Kaliningrad, is "fully aware that Russia is quite unpredictable,” says Jerzy Aleksandrowicz, a research fellow at the Casimir Pulaski Foundation. And with Poland taking over the EU's rotating presidency in January, it's not a bad time for Prime Minister Donald Tusk to raise the country's profile and push ahead with his predecessor's defence spending plans. Here's what Poland's arms spending spree means for NATO and European security. https://bit.ly/3TgclkZ

"The anonymous, underestimated and misunderstood EU is experiencing something of a heyday." In his book, 'Superpower Europe,' Marc De Vos delves into how the EU's response to recent challenges has sparked a "silent revolution," transforming the union from a quiet force into a strategically autonomous bloc. This evolution, De Vos argues, driven by crises like the Covid pandemic and increasing geopolitical tensions, has strengthened the EU's influence and reshaped its global role. https://bit.ly/3SAyz0X
