❔ In België krijgt drie tot vijf procent van de kankerpatiënten de diagnose Cancer of Unknown Primary (CUP): bij deze patiënten zijn er uitzaaiingen gevonden, maar is de oorspronkelijke locatie van de kanker onbekend. Dat maakt het voor artsen moeilijk om het ziekteverloop te voorspellen en een geschikte behandeling te vinden. De overlevingskans bij CUP-patiënten is daardoor beperkt. 🔬 Onlangs ontwikkelden onderzoekers aan het VIB-UGent Centrum voor Medische Biotechnologie i.s.m. Universiteit Gent en UZ Gent een nieuwe bloedtest om de oorsprong van CUP-tumoren te achterhalen. Tegelijk ontwikkelden het UZA en Universiteit Antwerpen onder leiding van prof. Guy Van Camp een complementaire weefseltest. Met de steun van Kom op tegen Kanker (vzw) leggen we nu onze expertise samen om een test te ontwikkelen die de oorsprong van CUP-tumoren met hoge zekerheid kan aantonen, zowel op bloed als weefsel. Last week, I had the opportunity to attend and present my work at the joint International Workshop on Plasma for Cancer Treament (#IWPCT9) and the International Conference on Plasma Medicine (#ICPM10) in Portorož, Slovenia. It was an enriching experience to share my research and learn from the amazing work being done in the plasma(-oncology) field.
