About us

We love getting older, but there is something about aging that doesn’t feel quite right. Why is it, for instance, that as we age, our chances of getting chronic diseases increases? Why does our body become frail and fragile? Why do we risk a decline in mental capacity and brain health? At Zirtui, we are here to combat the secondary effects of aging. Because we like getting older, but we don’t want to become old. And nor should you. Our focus is on supporting your body’s real age, also called biological age. We now know that age truly is just a number and that the right choices can help lowering your biological age. Our blends all have unique formulas, developed in-house by the scientific team of Zirtui, headed by Dr. Crabbe, molecular biologist. The formulas are meticulously fine-tuned and based on cutting edge longevity science With our DNA kit, you will be able to understand your (epi)genetics. Combined with our nutraceuticals, these insights will help you to unlock the best version of yourself. It is time to rewrite the rules about aging and start living for tomorrow!

Should we debunk the concept of Blue Zones as regions of exceptional longevity and healthy lifestyle? New research by Dr. Newman states that Blue Zones do not exist, and are rather the result of bad data management, and pension fraud. Dr. Newman’s findings suggest that the highest occurrences of extreme old age are correlated with high poverty rates, the absence of birth certificates, and a notable scarcity of individuals in their 90s. The research further indicates that economic hardship and incentives to commit pension fraud are strong predictors of purported longevity, contradicting the expectations of conventional demographic theories. His analysis also identified multiple discrepancies in the records of the so-called world’s oldest individuals, including a case where the same person appeared to have three different birthdays. Furthermore, his research discredited the popular concept of ‘Blue Zones’—areas claimed to have an unusually high number of healthy centenarians. Upon reviewing government data and surveys, Dr. Newman discovered that many of the people listed as living in these regions were, in fact, long deceased according to independent sources. Blue Zones are accredited for healthy lifestyle choices, including a well-balanced diet. This may not be entirely true. For instance, despite the notion that Okinawans maintain a diet rich in vegetables and sweet potatoes, government records show that this region consumes the lowest quantities of these foods in Japan and has one of the highest body mass indices in the country. Dr. Newman’s findings suggest that many of the dietary and lifestyle claims linked to ‘Blue Zones’ are not substantiated by empirical evidence. Dr. Newman received the Ig Nobel Prize for his work. The Ig Nobel Prizes, established in 1991, celebrate research that first “makes people laugh, and then think.” Read Dr. Newman's latest work here: https://lnkd.in/ePpm4iX9

Say hi to an axolotl! These cute amphibians are endangered species, and renowned for their regeneration powers, that allow them to regrow amputated limbs. In addition, axolotls seem to live longer than their other amphibian pals such as frogs, which caused scientists to look at their aging process. To learn more, Yun and Steve Horvath from Altos Labs in Cambridge, UK, along with their team, focused on a crucial indicator of aging known as DNA methylation. This process is one of several elements that impact epigenetics, which refers to the regulation of gene activity, and it involves adding chemical markers to DNA. In mammals and frogs, the distribution of these markers across the genome alters with age. Researchers have developed statistical models known as epigenetic clocks, which link these shifting patterns to chronological aging. Turns out: axolotls do not age after the age of 4. When researchers analyzed the methylation patterns in young and old axolotls, they discovered that the DNA methylation profiles were virtually identical—showing no connection between epigenetic age and chronological age (the number of years since birth). It appeared that axolotls only experienced epigenetic aging during their first 4 years of life, after which no additional signs of aging were observed. So why do axolotls appear to 'pause' epigenetic aging while humans cannot? This ability may be linked to their remarkable regenerative capacity. During limb regeneration, axolotl cells undergo a form of ‘reprogramming’ that erases many epigenetic changes, enabling them to transform into any required cell type. Studies have shown that similar reprogramming can be triggered in human cells, effectively erasing aging markers. However, applying this process to living humans presents numerous challenges that are yet to be solved. Read the study here: https://lnkd.in/egBE29WJ

#Taurine, an important ingredient of Zirtui's THE #carbX has been found to have neuroprotective activity. Taurine is a biogenic amino acid found in various organs, including the brain, heart, and kidneys. It declines with age in the brain. Taurine affects the function of neurotransmitters and taurine supplementation in mice counteracts the changes observed in aging and stimulates the neuroplastic potential of the brain. https://lnkd.in/eAPq9aEM

Metformin, a drug used for battling diabetes type 2 has been long on the radar as a potential longevity drug. Diabetes patients who took metformin were reportedly living longer than those not taking the drug (and not suffering from diabetes). New research in monkeys confirms the potential of Metformin as longevity drug, especially on brain aging. The results highlighted a significant slowing of aging indicators, notably a roughly 6-year regression in brain aging. Metformin is a well studied drug, and has been on the market for decades. Although it may give some side effects such as nausea, it is generally considered safe and thus a great candidate for a longevity drug! https://lnkd.in/eYCDh-8Q

Met veel enthousiasme kondigen we ons eerste event aan! Om af te trappen, hebben we dr. Ellen Crabbe uitgenodigd. #gezondheid #longevity #huid #darmmicrobioom #aantafel

Could #GLP-1 drugs such as #semaglutide aka #ozempic be the miracle longevity drug we are looking for? Research suggests that ozempic, a drug initially used for diabetes patients but now also famous as a weight-loss drug, may have the potential to delay aging. GLP-s1 agonists such as ozempic are currently being tested against, other diseases such as heart disease, arthritis, but also Alzheimer and cancer. The studies tracked more than 17,600 people, aged 45 or older, as they were given either 2.4 mg of semaglutide or a placebo for more than three years. Those who took the drug died at a lower rate from all causes, including cardiovascular issues and Covid-19, researchers found. Some key thoughts though: ✴ the study was done in people that are overweight and had heart disease ✴ no studies done on people under 45 ✴ it is unclear what the effect on healthy people is, this requires further studies ✴ some patients report severe side effects from using semaglutide ✴ use of semaglutide may result in muscle loss, which is to be avoided at old age Overall, the results are promising but further research is needed, especially in healthy individuals. Meanwhile, the pharmaceutical industry is looking for the next-gen GLP-1 agonists to hit the market. Stay alive folks, the future looks bright 😎 https://lnkd.in/ge9mA-QJ
