Can rope jumping help in lowering biological age? In an very interesting study published in Cell, researchers developed a new way of estimating biological age, on the basis of thermal facial patterns. With their #ThermoFace method, researchers were able to predict biological age on the basis of visible and infrared facial images. In a subsequent step, they were able to analyse interventions that had a positive effect on age. One particularly effective intervention? Rope skipping! Humans age dramatically at two points in their life, a new study found. The study, which tracked thousands of different molecules in people aged 25 to 75, detected two major waves of age-related changes at around ages 44 and again at 60. The findings could explain why spikes in certain health issues including musculoskeletal problems and cardiovascular disease occur at certain ages. https://lnkd.in/d9abmi4d

We already know that certain foods may lead to premature aging. Sugar is known to be linked to various metabolic diseases such as diabetes. A recent study has now shown that sugar can also negatively influence our biological age. Researchers found that a higher intake of sugar resulted in an increase in epigenetic age. Epigenetic clocks are a measure for your biological age rather than your chronological age. Researchers also examined the impact of a healthy diet on epigenetic markers and found the opposite effect: a higher-quality diet slowed the signs of aging. “Our findings appear to fit well with the general nutritional epidemiology literature that finds added sugars to be related to chronic diseases such as cardiometabolic conditions and cancer and related processes such as inflammation, all of which track with aging and are one manifestation of wear and tear on our bodies over time,” Dorothy Chiu, PhD, a Postdoctoral Scholar at the UCSF Osher Center for Integrative Health, and first author of the study, told. https://lnkd.in/eE9VUbdk

Another day, another longevity breakthrough! The naked mole rat will probably never win a beauty contest but this rodent is known to have an exceptional lifespan with lower chances of developing disease. Scientists have now been able to transfer a longevity gene from naked mole rats to regular mice, expanding the lifespan of the latter. Hyaluronan is a protein available in many organisms, including in human, but has an increased expression in the naked mole rats. Is there a possibility to extrapolate the findings to human? The scientists believe so: “We already have identified molecules that slow down hyaluronan degradation and are testing them in pre-clinical trials,” Seluanov says. “We hope that our findings will provide the first, but not the last, example of how longevity adaptations from a long-lived species can be adapted to benefit human longevity and health.” https://lnkd.in/dCc97Q6g

Could an ordinary fatty acid found in cheese and cow's milk be the new longevity kid on the block? Research found that C15:0 also known pentadecanoic acid has a strong potential to be a #longevity candidate. Higher levels of C15:0 seem to improve cardiovascular health, have anti-cancer activities, and affect several hallmarks of aging, such as chronic inflammation. Strikingly, in the experimental set-up, C15:0 behaved similarly to longevity drugs #rapamycin and #metformin. If true, C15:0 may a safe alternative to these two drugs. C15:0 is an essential fatty acid. Humans cannot produce C15:0 themselves and therefore C15:0 should be taken up from food or supplemented. Foods that are high in C15:0 include cheeses such as cheddar and pecorino. A study from the Humboldt University of Berlin reveals that our perception of when old age begins has shifted upwards over generations. 🔹 Key findings: ◼ Changing Perceptions: People now consider old age to start later in life, influenced by longer life expectancy and retirement ages. ◼ Age is Just a Number: As individuals age, they tend to push the onset of old age further, reflecting a desire to stay youthful. ◼ Health and Loneliness: Perceptions vary based on health and social factors, but the idea that “we are as old as we feel” holds strong. Bioligical age matters over chronological age This research highlights the evolving nature of aging and encourages us to embrace a more positive and flexible view of growing older. The scientific world is further unraveling the mechanisms behind aging. Turning off an inflammatory protein called Interleukin-11 (IL-11) in mice showed a 20% increase in lifespan in the treated mice. Blocking IL-11 in elder mice reduced inflammation, cancer occurrence, and poor metabolism, which all happen to be hallmarks of aging. Are we now close to a anti-IL-11 longevity treatment in people? Not quite ⬇ ✴ interleukin-11 is a cytokine, which are signaling molecules in multiple pathways in our cells, from inflammation to immune responses ✴ while deregulated cytokines are linked to unwanted processes such as cancer formation, they are not always the 'bad guys', as they also play crucial roles in development ✴ Interleukin-11 is upregulated in certain cancer types ✴ interleukin-11 is also upregulated in older people ✴ female interleukin-11 knockout mice (= mice without IL-11) are infertile ✴ knocking out IL-11 in other organisms also leads to severe developmental problems ✴ anti IL-11 antibodies are currently tested in clinical trials for treating fibrosis in human patients Key takeaways: ✅ mice are not humans ✅ current clinical trials with IL-11 in humans will be interesting, and we will have to check for effects on frailty, hair loss, etc ✅ Caution is needed, as IL-11 is not an isolated molecule, but plays a role in various cellular processes Interesting times 🔬 https://lnkd.in/guvdqyFH
