Linux Foundation Europe
Software Development
Driving open source innovation in Europe and beyond.
About us
LF Europe is an independent trusted supporter and vendor-neutral home for open source projects. We are the arena of choice for intra- and inter-regional open source and open standard collaboration in Europe, amongst public and private sectors as well as individual contributors. Europe is home to a thriving community of open source contributors — from individuals to enterprises to governments — who deliver innovation that positively impacts the region and the world. Today, open source is widely recognized by policymakers as a unique tool to achieve ambitious European-wide goals like the digital commons and digital sovereignty. As digital transformation accelerates and open source innovation continues to be a critical competitive differentiator, we established Linux Foundation Europe, a Bruxelles based non-profit, in September 2022 under the leadership of General Manager, Gabriele Columbro. Linux Foundation Europe’s mission is to accelerate the growth of thriving open collaborative efforts focused on challenges and opportunities of all European constituencies, from individuals to public and private sectors, while providing an on-ramp for European projects and companies to succeed and collaborate on a global scale.

Great to see Cailean Osborne keynoting on a toolkit for measuring the impact of public funding for #OSS, co-developed with Sovereign Tech Fund and CHAOSS project, as part of our involvement in the NGI Commons. If you want to learn more on the impact of OSS funding, read more in our latest blog: https://lnkd.in/ebfhuR5e
Digital Infrastructure Insights Fund just met for the Cohort 4 - kickoff at Ford Foundation in NYC: 2 days of intense discussions, identifying common ground, relentless peer-review and forging connections come to a close. This workshop is one of my absolute favourite days of the entire year, because people interested in the same (allegedly) obscure topic meet for the first time face-to-face - and there is always a buzz of excitement and curiosity and opportunity in the room. Just look at these faces (and this was at the end of day 2 already!) With this cohort, I feel we finally narrowed in on the feat to define how exactly public interest and digital infrastructures intersect- and why its undergirding infrastructures are the nucleus for so many bigger questions, relevant to society at large. Keep a close eye on this space and our website, https://lnkd.in/emcsWJS4 for detailed info on our new research grants. Expect work on the Browser/Search Funding Ecosystem, Tripartite Governance of Commons, OSM, Code Classifications, Community ISPs, Sunsetting, DPI Privacy Issues, Metrics and Values, Compliance as well as deployments of OSS in critical supply chains like research (and so much more!). We`ll bust the hype and shine a light where there is too little attention to detail - For now: Thank you, fantastic cohort, for coming all the way to the city, sitting through 11 project presentations and my musings - and thank you D//F-Reviewer Cailean Osborne (The Linux Foundation / NGI Commons) for sending us off to the days with a great keynote on metrics, how funders might deploy them - and what implications measures and other indicators of professionalisation of (a formerly unregulated) field of (peer-)production could have on the people behind the code.

SBOMs (Software Bill of Materials) are essential for software security and transparency. They detail all components, including open source, in a product, helping manage risks and ensure compliance. Yet, they’re often misunderstood. Discover why SBOMs should be a standard practice https://hubs.la/Q02HpjZ20
