🇧🇲Throne Speech 2024🇧🇲
About us
The Government of Bermuda consists of a Governor, a Deputy Governor, a Cabinet, and a Legislature based on two legislative chambers – a Senate and a House of Assembly. Main Functions of the Legislature Bermuda’s system of Government is based on the “Westminster Model” of parliamentary democracy. It is a system that relies heavily upon the existence of organized political parties, each laying policies before the electorate for approval. The party who wins the most seats at a general election, or who has the support of a majority of members in the House of Assembly, forms the Government. In accordance with the Bermuda Constitution, the leader of the majority party is asked by the Governor to form a Government (i.e. a Cabinet). The largest minority party becomes the official opposition with its own leader and “Shadow Cabinet”. The Cabinet is responsible to the Legislature.

We are thrilled to celebrate the 175th anniversary of the first Portuguese arrivals in Bermuda—a milestone that highlights the profound ties we share. Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Sport, the Hon. Owen Darrell : “Supporting Eduardo Medeiros’ invaluable research on the history of Bermudians of Portuguese descent not only bridges a crucial gap in our historical record but also honours the enduring legacy of Portuguese culture in Bermuda. This work builds on Patricia Marirrea Mudd’s groundbreaking text from over two decades ago and brings new insights and stories to light for future generations. I am particularly pleased that the Department of Culture could support summer student and Bermudian historian, Ms. Lilly DeCouto as she assisted this project in the early stages of research. Bermuda’s Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Sport remains committed to fostering meaningful cultural initiatives which celebrate and preserve our rich, shared heritage.

Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Sport, the Hon. Owen K. Darrell, joined the community on Saturday evening to pay tribute to one of Bermuda’s greatest musicians and educators, Professor Eddie Ming, at the Drum School’s Vegan Jazz & Percussion Gathering. The event, hosted at Professor Ming’s renowned Drum School in St. Georges, showcased the extraordinary talents of Gene 'Stacker' Joell and the Drum School's Ensemble 'Mañana,' highlighting the impact of Eddie Ming’s lifelong dedication to music, mentorship, and wellness. “It is an honour to celebrate a Bermudian who has given so much to our island, not only through his music but through his vision of a community strengthened by discipline, creativity, and a commitment to healthier lifestyles,” said Minister Darrell. “Eddie Ming has transformed his love for percussion into a legacy, inspiring countless young people to find purpose, discipline, and joy through music.” With a career spanning decades, Professor Ming has created a space at the Drum School where students of all ages are welcomed and encouraged to connect with music and learn life lessons beyond the drums. Ming’s Rhythm Lab has served as both a sanctuary and a classroom, where Eddie teaches not only the art of drumming but also promotes a vegan lifestyle and the value of discipline. His mission is to pass on his legacy to the next generation, and his dream is to see one of his students take over his studio, carrying forward his vision for years to come. In recognition of Professor Ming’s contribution to Bermuda’s cultural heritage, the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Sport proudly awarded a grant of $2,500 to support the Drum School’s continued impact on the community. “Professor Ming’s work embodies the spirit of Bermuda’s cultural richness,” said Minister Darrell. “We are grateful for the positive influence he has on our youth and for the way he has used rhythm to create a profound sense of belonging, growth, and hope.” The evening was filled with inspiring performances, delicious vegan cuisine, and moments of reflection on the powerful role music plays in strengthening communities. Professor Eddie Ming’s legacy continues to resonate deeply, reminding us of the power of music and mentorship to shape lives.
